You have to purchase a license to use the software on a device. The license SE sells you is only good for 1 device. Thus, you have to buy another copy to use the software on another device. This is completely independent of the fact that you need an account.

This ensures that the player is obtaining the software through legal means. Technically on FFXI, you could find an iso of the software somewhere on the internet and use that if you originally got the PS2 version of the game. The problem is, that's not legal.

MMO's word the EULA so that you don't own the game, items, or currency so you cant pirate the client because SE can't prove you prevented them from making a profit off the sell of a registration key. Now if you have a registration key that wasn't purchased that still isn't piracy it is theft because the store or retailer purchased the registration key from a disruptor or from SE. So private servers is piracy, shoplifting the game key even tho the game stay at gamestop is theft, and getting a copy of the CLIENT from the internet is OK.

You needing a different registration key per system is just another from of revenue for the company. I don't agree with it but I do understand it.

From my IT legal perspective I get the OP disappointment but legally the way i read and understood the EULA it is legal to conduct business this way. Now if you quote the EULA and say downloading the CLIENT is piracy I can try and find you some blizzard legal document that they filed to try and stop private servers and how they word the client is just a client and can't use it as a stand alone game so a court precedent exist on the client topic.
