I see different guild for crafts and I see people sitting in random areas and making things I guess. And I understand there are things that can be crafted and sold? How does one get into that? What are the benefits of that?

Once you get Lancer to 10 and do the level 10 class quest at the Lancer's Guild, you'll be able unlock other classes. Of the 19 classes available, 8 are crafting classes (and 3 are gathering classes, where you go out in the field and gather stuff from resource nodes (or fish up stuff from bodies of water if you're a Fisher)). In Gridania, you'll have the Carpenters' Guild and the Leatherworkers' Guild you can go to if you want to try crafting out (Gridania gets kinda screwed in this; the other two cities have three crafting guilds). The only worthwhile market to sell to is other players (the pittance the NPC Vendors will pay is not remotely worth it), but you won't be able to put stuff up on the Market Board until you get your retainers, which gets unlocked at a level 17 Main Scenario quest. The retainers will also hold 350 more inventory slots, which you will *need* as any kind of a serious crafter to hold your crafting materials, so it's probably best to wait until then before starting to craft seriously. But you can certainly dip your toe in and just see what it's like once you've unlocked changing classes.

Oooh awesome. Is there a way to travel to other places too? Or am I staying in Gridania or where ever for the entire game?
You'll get to go to the other cities at level 14 in the Main Scenario quests, and be granted permanent rights to the airships between them. In fact, the Main Scenario *requires* you to go to the other cities at that point. And, of course, the other cities have their own Aetherytes, so you can attune to them and get teleport rights, as well. If you keep at this game, the Main Scenario will eventually take you just about *everywhere* in Eorzea.
Cool! So I'd be able to play with others who start in other places too. That's pretty awesome. My husband and I play together but we started in the same place just in case, haha. This game seems pretty cool already. Thanks for the help. You'll get to go to the other cities at level 14 in the Main Scenario quests, and be granted permanent rights to the airships between them. What's the level cap though? How hard is it to level and get gear?
Level cap is 50. Levelling is not hard at all, and can be particularly fast if you participate in a lot of pop-up battles known as "FATEs" (for "Full Active Time Event"). There are number of other options for gaining XP as well, including the quests, the levequests (which the Main Scenario will unlock for you at 10), the hunting log (which your level 10 class quest will unlock), guildhests (which you can unlock right after you unlock levequests), and instanced dungeons (you'll unlock the first one on level 15 in the Main Scenario when it sends you to Sastasha). Your level 10 Main Scenario quest will also unlock the Recommendation List, which will show you all of those options currently available to your character in your current zone. Gear is handed out fairly liberally by the quests (causing some grumbling from the crafters, who would rather you buy what they make), and can be bought from both NPCs and from other PCs on the Market Board, as well as earned in rewards from dungeons and obtained from your Grand Company quartermaster (you'll join a Grand Company at level 20 in the Main Scenario). Your job quests at 45 and 50 will give you your AF gear, which gets you set for the endgame (where your first task will be upgrading from it, though).Cool! Good sites for researching information are the Lodestone, Square-Enix's official support site, and the fan-run wikis Gamer's Escape and XIVDB.

I'd also recommend getting access to Grand Companies (not to be confused with Free Companies) as soon as possible. Not saying this to rush you, but because if you don't you'll lose out on a good amount of seals (for doing everyday things you already do, like FATEs), which act as a currency for you to buy things like special gear and exp+ books for crafters and gatherers (VERY nice). Don't worry too much, I had already hit well past the 100 FATE mark by the time I joined mine. Also it really doesn't matter which one you join, the main difference is in the gear offered.
I believe you get access to them shortly after Lord of the Inferno (level 20 story quest) or something? It's around there.
The main scenario quest immediately after beating story-mode Ifrit in Lord of the Inferno starts your induction into a Grand Company. This all happens at level 20, yes. It actually takes three quests to complete your induction. You'll get offered GC membership in A Hero in the Making, you'll choose which GC you want to join by choosing the appropriate Company You Keep quest (and then be required to do an instanced fight), and then you get a third quest finalizing your induction (Wood's Will Be Done, Till Sea Swallows All or For Coin and Country, depending on which GC you chose).
Yes the main quest you get to travel by airship and later on use boats to other areas.
Currently i have Goldsmith, Weaver, Leathersmith, Blacksmith, Carpenter, Armourer and Alchemist that i am working up
Also you can have other classes (jobs) like Miner and Fisher which Miner helps for your crafting classes especially armourer
Simply doing Leves for your crafting nets you good xp and Gil
