I want a feathery motorcycle with the head of a goat as my headlight and the hardened tendrils of a coblyn as my tailpipes all accented by a helmet crafted from the finest specimen of Wight's skull.

I seem to remember some form of flying transportation in an early promo clip. Does anyone else remember this and what the name of it is called?
I want to be able to ride around on avatars like fenrir or something.

Shoopuffs. 'nuff said.
(Hypello: Riiiiide zee shoopuff?)
Give me a Pieste and I'm good.
Oh also. Anyone who says Chocobos are the only mounts the FF series has had or needs....
In FFV, you had Hiryu, Lenna's Wind Drake/Wyvern AND Krile's unnamed Wyvern.
In VI, there were the Magitek armors.
In X, you had the Shoopuffs, which really only ferried you across a lake, but still.
And in XIII you had the Eidolons double in function during battle.
There have been other things the characters rode. Chocobos are just the staple. However, if I can tame and ride a Mandragora or Deadly Nightshade, then I'm all for it.
Can it truly be any more painful than wearing a bronze subligar all day? Wedgies from that stuff make Coblyn Mounts sound like riding a moving Craftsmatic bed.
Edit:
I believe we could, and probably should, move from Chocobos (though not excluding, of course). Thing is, as long as we don't go "animal mounts" all over the place (tigers, wolves, ostriches, etc.) we'll be golden, specially monsters.
Here's my view on it: The whole "everyone is a barbarian in the Dark Age and we tame the wildest mossters, including the ones we kill because that's how damn Conan we are. Also huge beards." isn't exactly Final Fantasy's feel (Hell, if anything, characters are rather... "delicate"...), not saying I am against it, it just isn't what's supposed to be here. Chocobos are merely our horses, a rather tame animal. We don't go mounting polar bears or freakin' gorillas. Final Fantasy does have a rather toned-down steampunk feel to it, though, and it's what I've often appreciated, how it seems to have slight technological advance in a bit of a "what if we had gone down this road instead?" situations, ie. the Airship.
And even after assembling this argument, I can't for the life of me present a valid suggestion of a mount that falls under the mentioned category. I guess I just voided myself.
