Confusion: Staff be Two-hand Weapon

Hello-- something that I have notice in-game is that my staff weapon, as whitemage, is categorised as a two-hand weapon. yet when in battle stance I hold using only one hand.

To me this seem incorrect.

I do see that dragoon and warrior use two-hand. Blackmage it is the same as Whitemage?. I am unsure at work.

Not only physical element, but will mage have ability to have off-hand item, in the future? Grip? Gem?

WHM's and BLM's currently have one handed weapons in wands and cudgels respectively and have shields for off hands. Although i would like to see something different for mages off hand like a gem or something as you stated, would fit a little better in my mind. I think the the thought behind the staffs being two handed is that while you can hold in in one hand you would need 2 hands to wield it properly.

It's mostly confusing because of the generic style animations they chose to go with - Instead of like FFXI for example where every race and gender had it's own set of animation, everyone has this ..odd stance for "2" hand staves. BLM is the same but they hold it at an angle.
