Which Chat to use in Dugeon Fight?....and Marking Targets.

I am confused which chat to use, main, battle or event? for dungeons? they are part battle, and part event and i have seen some people post in blue ...didnt know how they did that or what to use?

also is there a key to start typing chat? it is a pain to have to place the cursor into the chat window to talk in the middle of a fight. thanks for any tips on this. Made it thru the first five dungeons but want to get better...and being able to commumicate more easily will be good.

also the marking with numbers? how is that done? I saw a post saying to place the Signs Icon on the hot bar and it will give us choices of numbers etc. The Healer last night was very good and he marked the targets and it was a big help. I would lilke to know how to do that too. thanks gain. we need better tutorials in game for this stuff, but then maybe i missed it. that is always a possibilty as this is the first MMO i have gotten into in depth and have a LOT to learn. thanks for help on this too.

I prefer to use main or another chat I have customized the settings for. Are you using pc? You can press Enter to start typing.

Shift+M to open the window/box for markings.

    what system are you on?
if its ps3 I cant help
easy chat is to hit the / button (which puts a / into chat) and typing p (so it looks like /p) will talk into party chat which is default color of blue.
the signs are as mentioned within your post in a menu but you can set any of the marking icons onto your bars to use them with quick access. This also works on emotes (if your doing battle-craft leves I recommend having soothe and beacon set as they are used often)

I personally open the Markings window, and leave it on the top right, next to my minimap. Then just cycle targets, and apply the 1 - 2 - 3 targets.

You can also use a Macro, and all you need to do is 1 button click:

    /marking "Target to Attack 1" <t>
    /ac "Target Forward" <t>
    /wait 1seconds
    /marking "Target to Attack 2" <t>
    /wait 1seconds
    /ac "Target Forward" <t>
    /marking "Target to Attack 3" <t>

Yes PC here. and wow thanks everyone here is so nice, what great help. I was shy about asking but it sure was worth the risk.....thanks again so much..

uh mouseover...that is a macro that is activated by mousing over the target? that sounds good. i need fast method to do the marking as there is only a few seconds sometimes esp if party members go running in ahead of me and wont wait. thanks again all!!!!

wow, such great help. ok Enter for chat, /p for party chat, i can do that....and then the the marking, Asheillen, you mention putting the numbers on your hot bar...uh, how to you then 'apply" them to the target? just clock on them and then the number or sign? that would be cool

yes i have the sooth on my bar ..havent had to use beacon yet but i am only at level 36 so maybe that comes later.

You'd need to assign it to a macro but whatever you have moused over gets marked when you activate that <mo> macro

That's right. If you put a mark on your hotbar, activating that hotbar slot toggles that mark for whatever you currently have targeted (or soft-selected, if you use the gamepad left/right or numpad 4/6). The first activation turns the mark on for that target, second turns it off, etc. If you mark something 1, then switch targets and use mark 1 again, it takes 1 off the first target and puts it on the second in 1 click.

Just try it out in the field sometime, it's pretty intuitive once you see it in action.

For the chat thing... In your OP you were asking which chat log to use. The different tabs don't really have any effect on what you say to others. They're just different filters, which you can set up in the chat log settings. By default, the General tab has all the actual chat modes (say, party, linkshell, free company, shout, yell), along with item/experience gains, crafting results, etc. The Battle tab has battle info (hits/misses/effects of the actions of you, your party, your targets, etc.). The Event tab is just NPC text that shows up in NPC dialog boxes, e.g., when an NPC is telling you about a quest. It's handy if you accidentally click through a bit of dialog and miss what was said.

But you can set these (and one additional tab if you add it) up however you want. You could make "General" include nothing but /shout, Battle include nothing but /say, and shove everything else on the 4th custom tab (or just leave it out entirely). Or you could stick everything on "General." This is all personal preference about how you want to see the game's various text outputs on your screen. Other players can't tell how you have these set up, and they have no effect on what other players see when you use the various chat modes.

For the various chat modes, there are also shortcut keys. The default for party is Alt+P. Alt+S for say, Alt+L for linkshell #1, and so on. These will temporarily use that chat mode for one line of chat, without changing your current default chat mode (what mode you're in when you hit enter). To change your default chat mode, you can use /cm p (for party), /cm s (for say), and so on, or just use the slash command on its own. For example, /p and enter (with no text) will change the default mode to party, /s and enter will change it to say, etc. Note that you can not change your default chat mode to shout.
