    Is it up to me?

    Hi Forum!

Had a thought ...is it possible to make any type of character you like? For instance, can I combine Archer and Conjurer if I like or do I have to follow the Monk, White Mage, Summoner etc roles?

Are there any downsides on doing whatever I think is best? If this is possible.

And can I change appearance in the game for some gil or do I need to spend real-life money? Aaaaaaand how do folks get those awesome mounts?

    Thanks!

    1. You will get the cross-class abilities. Even between a healer and a warrior. Then each class has its own jobs, available once you get the required crystal for it (class quest lvl 30)
    2. Just play as you like and have fun! From this point of view FF XIV: ARR is very open
    3. Once you'll extend the subscription you will get a Fantasia potion reward. With that you an change your character appearance only once. I wonder if they will sell them as DLCs as well or ingame for a good amount of Gils in the future.

To progress in party content (including the dungeons required by the main story) much past level 30, you're going to need to unlock job(s) for your class(es). Conjurer just isn't a good enough healer, Gladiator isn't a good enough tank, etc. Unlocking a given job requires a specific combination of classes leveled. The jobs are also limited as to which classes they can pull cross-class skills from. WHM can only use skills from ACN and THM, for example.

It may help to not think of the jobs as class 1 + class 2, since they don't really play that way. A WHM isn't so much CNJ+ACN as just specialized CNJ. The WHM job quest just has a requirement of having ACN to 15, and you can pull skills from ACN. But you don't really add in play style elements from ACN.

When you're soloing, you can stay as the class(es) and cross-class whatever skills you want. If you want to be a Conjurer with a bunch of Archer skills when you solo, that's up to you. Some of those skills will be helpful, some will not. Hawk's Eye, for example, won't do much good, since a CNJ doesn't get much use out of DEX or physical accuracy.

Eventually, they're going to include a salon feature that will let you change your hair style, tattoos, etc. Not your race or gender. I don't know if they've given a specific list of what it will let you change. Until then, the only way to change anything (and even after, the only way to change race or gender) is with a Phantasia potion, which you get as a reward for your first 30 days of paid subscription time.

Couerl mount is a reward for the Collector's Edition. Legacy Chocobo mount is a reward for having an account with Legacy status. Ahriman mount is a reward for 90 days of paid subscription time. Unicorn is a reward for the level 30 CNJ class quest. Magitek is a reward for completing the main story quest line.

It's a bit ironic that the most useful whm cross class skill isn't from the must do Arcanist :-)

So if I combine an archer with an conjurer I will be less likely to be chosen as a partymember for dungeons?

The thing is that any skill you could take from Archer to use on CNJ would be useless in a party. You want to take skills that are useful. Skills like Swiftcast from Thaumaturge, or Eye For An Eye from Arcanist are useful. Raging Strikes and Hawk's Eye are not. Not for a CNJ.

When you solo you can do whatever you want, but when you party remember that everyone else needs you to perform a certain roll. If your damage dealers showed up with Cure from CNJ and didn't do any damage but just spammed Cure, you wouldn't get far. If you show up popping Raging Strikes from Archer and Internal Release from Pugilist, not only will they be no help to you, but your party will probably end up dead.

Crysta is used to buy play time for FFXIV and/or FFXI. I'm not aware of any other uses for it. At least not for NA accounts.

Before level 30, most people aren't going to be checking what cross-class skills you have, and it won't matter that much. A few of them (like Swiftcast from THM) are really nice, but most others don't make a huge difference.

After level 30, if you aren't a WHM, most people aren't going to want you healing their dungeons. Because regardless of what cross-class skills you take, you won't be as effective a healer as a CNJ as you would be as a WHM.

It depends a bit on what you mean by "combining" them. The sense in which most of the replies take it is using cross-class skills from one class while playing another. But beyond that, you can certainly play as many classes as you like with the same character and alternate between playing one for a while and playing a different one another time.

In fact, it's rather useful to have a tank, a DPS, and a healer class all available to switch between when your FC is trying to put a group together and may need one or another depending on who else is there. In most games, that's done by having several characters to alternate between, but in this one where we're allowed to level all the classes, it's more often done by pursuing several quite different classes with the same character.
