A number of plans made at the beginning of the year will soon be ripe for release. Among these are the shiny new job system (a proper system, mind you, not just renamed classes), an in-game achievement system related to Lodestone character histories, and new modes of transport to address the mobility issue.

Airships, perhaps? [They look like hot air balloons in the artwork.]

It's so patronizing seeing them fly overhead while you're walking to Broken Water for the thousandth time.

Aside from airships, there's also the chocobo caravan just outside of Gridania and the docks in Thanalan.

Does the whole 'Bold Summer 2011' thing mean things coming in 1.18? I'm not sure why else he'd emphasise it so much

Summer 2011 includes June, July and August. So no, it doesn't mean everything is coming with 1.18. It'll probably be 1.21~ that brings the last few additions in the list.

I was thinking on the topic of why chocobos are not introduced yet. Maybe they actually want them to be more than transportation? What if they want to have mounted battle?

December, January and February should be your equivalent of the northern hemisphere's summer.
