If, for future events, they stepped it up to something more like 200 winners, that seems like it would be a much more reasonable route than the community team going "sorry you guys are mad, here are some more necklaces".
People are not mad because they lost per say. People are displeased at SE not following the credentials they required of submitters when picking the winners.
