Anyone ever wonder why ... (Ascians)

Because the first design was when XIV had a clear and unique story direction before it went full fanservice Final Fantasy themepark, shoehorning references from every FF like naming them after the FF12 scions. So now they're the counterpart of the Twelve that fight for Darkness/Chaos but aren't necessarily evil, just like my FF3 where the Warriors of Darkness weren't actually evil.

That other guy is Tranvanchet. While he's never confirmed to be an Ascian, it is very obvious he is one. He's simply not weaping the Ascian robes.

Y'shtola called in a CS the Ascians as shadoweaters and Tranvanchet has no shadow.

Honestly I think its because there was simply a different development team and direction during 1.0 and 2.0. Obviously they made that very clear with the story we know so far from both versions. I believe however they are trying to tie in what they can (they cant or wont just recount 1.0's story) while still going the new teams route.

A group of hooded men = a group of hooded reapers. They can make that work.

Agreed, that was one of the most disapointing things about the storyline. Made them feel so generic. It felt like the Ascians were just Power Ranger villains.

It didn't help that just about every "nefarious" plan they were involved with was repeatedly foiled by us players. With every monster they stuck on us was killed right after yet they kept going on about how unstoppable they were and how they'll get us because....darkness...I guess?

Speaking of the "keys" I always wondered what happened to the two taken by the Ascians in version 1.0's story line.

Then again, I would be surprised if we ever saw mention of them in 2.0. The Development team seems to have taken parts of 1.0's story out or completely rewritten them.
Originally, all the Scions (excluding one notable person...) had the ability to use the echo, including your traveling companion. In 2.0, no one has the echo but you and said notable person.

They remind me a bit too much of shonen jump tier villians. One dimensional and cringeworthy.

At the end i was hoping it would reveal the true form but nope.. just more anime style bad guys.

As I was going through the main story I wanted to believe the Ascians wanted to retake Eorzea and revive their people. That somehow in the past they were wiped out by the primals, and in response they created Ultima Weapon to destroy them and reclaim the land, but since they were away for so long the land was overtaken by all the existing races. Then they plotted their return.

But no, it's just, "Darkness dark evil dark!"

I was also reminded of this. Don't get me wrong though, I was not disappointed, I thought the story was great and this was a fantastic setup for the next arc.
