You would be correct, sire. They don't have corporeal forms, so they possess Spoken.

Agreed, that was one of the most disapointing things about the storyline. Made them feel so generic. It felt like the Ascians were just Power Ranger villains.

It didn't help that just about every "nefarious" plan they were involved with was repeatedly foiled by us players. With every monster they stuck on us was killed right after yet they kept going on about how unstoppable they were and how they'll get us because....darkness...I guess?

They don't do what they do because they're evil, they do what they do because they are essentially another tribe looking to resurrect their God--Zodiark (which, incidentally, means destroying the Mother Crystal). The problem with that, is that Hydaelyn is constantly foiling them.

Ascians holding a human like appearance are overlords, those skeletal ones are lower tier Ascians. That other guy is Tranvanchet. While he's never confirmed to be an Ascian, it is very obvious he is one. He's simply not weaping the Ascian robes.

Y'shtola called in a CS the Ascians as shadoweaters and Tranvanchet has no shadow.

Speaking of the "keys" I always wondered what happened to the two taken by the Ascians in version 1.0's story line.

Then again, I would be surprised if we ever saw mention of them in 2.0. The Development team seems to have taken parts of 1.0's story out or completely rewritten them.
Originally, all the Scions (excluding one notable person...) had the ability to use the echo, including your traveling companion. In 2.0, no one has the echo but you and said notable person.

If you mean Minfillas organization, the organization in 1.0 was another, called The Path of Twelve.
The Path of Twelve collected all people with the echo to investigate the gift together.

I still remember that cutscene from 1.0 when you first see an Ascian in Thanalan and how the said cutscene made me fill chilly down my spine @_@ I miss the 1.0 Ascians for sure!
