I played XI also, an while AF could take awhile. There was no programmed cap that made it so you couldn't progress more then x-amount each week. Here, you have a cap that makes it so you can't complete AF2 + Relic+1 before 5 months.

FFXI the relics, basically what the OP is talking about had all kinds of roadblocks and wait times.
