Not saying I agree or disagree but all of you need to learn to read better. NO gil and NO TRADING BETWEEN PLAYERS is clearly typed in the original post. so all the "people would use items as currency" arguments are invalid.

My mistake, then.
Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater. It would kill the entire crafter/gatherer dynamic, since everyone would have to do everything themselves. Making it so that people can't cooperate with each other for anything besides combat is ridiculous; friendships are built over that sort of thing.
To me, battle content (especially FATEs, but also Duty Finder) is extremely impersonal. Nobody is interested in talking to each other. I've made a few friends pugging, but for the most part, my friendships are built around my crafting classes, because they're more long term, and knowing how someone deals with money feels more familiar to me than knowing whether or not they can avoid red circles on the ground.Interesting, but I don't consider trading with other people as playing with them, it has a very impersonal feel to it.
Might as well be buying from a vendor as a marketboard.
And there would still be dungeons, and fates, and primals and FC's which gives plenty of multiplayer action.
You seem very hostile, do you not like people who maybe have ideas different than your own, does it threaten you in some way?

The same reason there is money in real life?
I'd rather not return to the bartering system, thanks.
Im just going to say no OP. Gil is just a staple of the final fantasy series. Like Cid, chocobos, meteor, ultima, you name it. It will always be here.
If you eliminate gil, the community will just find a new item to use as currency, people will try to monopolize the item, players like OP will call for the item to be removed, cycle repeats...
Shards would probably become the new currency amongst players and are already preferred over gil and traded in exorbitant amounts for things.

No thank you, I like making things and giving them to my friends.
Actually, its a really interesting idea. There would still be markets that could be played, although it would be difficult to implement. Somebody has some items they want to "sell" (trade), and... That's the difficult part, right now you can just exchange your item for gil, which you can then use to buy things you need. If you trade your one item for something specific, it would be difficult to "sell", because of the small amount of people who want your item AND have the item you need.
I really like the idea (maybe in another game, gil is a staple), but I personally think people would just use certain items as currency, thinks that are moderately difficult to obtain, limited supply, etc etc.
Con: this game seems to be directed more to the casual player aka people that don't no life the game and don't have time to hunt down gear and such and would rather buy it. If they take out Gil from the game then they might aswell close the game as a large part of the sub base would quid
"A wounded man says to his assailant "if I live I will kill you if I die you are forgiven" thus is the rule of honor" - Omertá

the reason why most call this a bad idea is because people play for satisfaction some get it from simply playing and having fun but most get it from crafting and making large amounts of gil (or gold or anything thing else that is the term for money) off of it. people make money from selling runs of something hard for others but easier for them, or just simply doing things that others can't and having something better then everyone else. while getting rid of gil and trade would not affect (or effect god i hate those two words) the third situation seeing how they can do things others can't without gil it would greatly affect those who play simply to get their pride full off of selling good that people are unable to get (if they hog up all the material spots) or to lazy to get. making alot (if not most) of the player base quit because most people play to flaunt something may it be gear or money or something like a world first.

There is no way to eliminate currency without eliminating trading.
And when one eliminates trading in the game, one promotes services trading via third-party medium. I.e. selling runs and stuff like that for real money. To eliminate that, one then needs to eliminate co-operative play from the game, i.e. all raiding will now be done with NPCs only.
And thus we end up with an online single player game.
