[Dev1058] Idea for the Future: Merit System

An Idea For Future Content Note: Used Dev1058 since I used the idea of incorporating Jobs into the mix of it.

Forgive me if the suggestion has been posted before. In light of the new battle system changes, along with the point allotment, I'd like to see a Merits system in the future. Once again, not trying to turn XIV into XI-2, however the Merit system was awesome in it's own right simply because it gave me something to do after I hit the level cap.

In games like WoW, and Rift, I hit level 50 and the only thing left to do is go do Heroic/Elite dungeons in order to get new gear, doing it over and over again until I get the right gear, then endgame is essentially the same sort of dungeon just longer. As much as I like both of those games, it's extremely boring. I just recently hit level 50 on Rift, and I'm so bored I've almost nearly stopped playing all-together.

In XI, however, in order to explain the system to those who never played it (though I'm sure many have), once you hit level cap you could switch to gaining "Merit Points" instead of EXP, and every 10k XP in that mode, you received 1 merit point to put into a specific aspect. You were only able to put points into classes that were also at 75, but if you had 2 level 75 jobs, you could gain points with Job A but put points into Job B if you wanted to. You could do all of this while waiting for your LS to get together and do events to go get better gear. And these merits would help you out in the field!

Stuff you could unlock in XI: You could upgrade your attributes, such as STR, VIT, etc.

If you were a Samurai, you could upgrade your meditate to have a lower recast timer, or increase the effect of your Zanshin. It also allowed you to purchase abilities that had long timers (Anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes) on them but were powerful when used, and then put more merits to decrease the timer on the abilities.

http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Category:Merit_Points <- The XI wiki page for more info

Examples for unlocks that could work with Jobs:

Now that Jobs have been announced and explained a little bit. I think they could incorporate this Merit system into those jobs. Say, for example, that as Pugilist you unlock Monk at level 30. However, once you hit level 50, you can start earning "Job Points" and start putting in points into Monk in order to improve that Job and make it better for party play.

Any thoughts or ideas to better improve upon this idea? Please be constructive.

Insulting people in the counter argument isn't going to change their minds. It will make them stick harder to their opinion regardless of whether or not it's right, and think less of your opinion simply because you insulted them. In essence, if you want to try and change someone's mind, come up with a well thought-out response and don't be a dick.

If Jobs are only titles (No evidence they are leveled up like Classes)

Then the best idea would be to bring the Job Point system from Tactics over.

Every time you do a party event like run through a dungeon Your current assigned Job gets Job points on completetion or for performing tasks specific to your Job (Healing for White Mage).

With enough JP you can pay to upgrade the skills and traits the JOB gives you to make it more powerful.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

Right, I'm using them as the idea of being titles. I'm not saying at Monk level 50, I mean Pugilist level 50 would be able to put points into Monk in order to make their Monk "title" better. So whenever they switch to being a Monk instead, they get the points they've earned. Essentially what you said in being that it should be like Tactics.

I just want something to keep me occupied for a while after level cap.

I vote yes but add more to it so we can sorta customise our "title" jobs. Like you can be a holy monk (monk with healing powers) elemental monk (monk with nuking powers) or a monk under a certain kung fu/ karate form (bear, tiger, mantists etc)

yeah that would be a pretty good thing to add, but only for jobs so u can see the difference between classes and jobs, like better stats at end game giving hardcore players what they want.

They did say they would be giving abilities through quests, but honestly I couldn't see those quests lasting a long time. I was 75 for a while and I never even capped all of my merits because I mainly did meriting on the side when I wasn't doing stuff with my LS. But still, I love the option to do so. Seeing the difference between a level cap job vs a merit cap job is crazy. It would help define your character a bit more as well, on top of the quests to gain abilities.

As the topic is named, it's an idea for the future. There's some good things in XI that could make this game great without turning it into XI-2. As long as I get it as some point, I'll be happy
