I dunno about you guys but fates are officially overcrowed to the point that melee have almost no chance of hitting anything before the fate is over.
Either make them scale or split the servers more so that there are less people on thanks.

are you solo or with a group?
They do scale based on the amount of players doing them (mentioned in beta phase 3 patch notes), but the difference is ridiculously minimal. I'd like to see FATEs scaling better, while dungeons, hunting log etc. would be buffed to give more EXP (hunting log gives you fast exp for a while, but falls out of proportion once you reach the level you need to complete the third one). I have been forced to grind my ACN with FATE zerg groups and it just makes me feel stupid. I do dungeons until they stop giving me enough exp to be worth the wait time (once I get SCH up, I hope queue times get short enough to make dungeons worthy for longer)

Best bet is to be in a group. If its busy get/make a fate group, it makes getting gold so much easier and getting more mob xp kills.
They're fairly easy to solo once you get in the groove for it in a certain area. Spam an aoe, circle of scorn, flash, w/e and you'll get gold every time (non boss/gather fates anyroad). Sometimes you may need to be one step ahead of the herd and run to the next fate before the last one is over.
Now, what I really want to see is a miniaturized version of the fate completion bar on the map. Knowing when it started doesn't matter when they can end in 30 seconds, then an hour later when less people are on they can go down the 8 mins left and still not have anyone there.
I was having this problem as a Dragoon because I currently have no AoE abilities. However, I eventually learned that to get gold on every fate all I need to do is tab-target through mobs and use my single ranged ability. The damage is pathetic and it doesn't actually help anyone, but it allows me to get hits in on lots of different mobs. To get contribution, you don't need to be the first person to hit the mob (although that helps you get more exp), but you definitely need to do damage to lots of different mobs if you want to get gold.
As others have mentioned, being in a full party helps a lot as well.

But you're a GLD. Just use Sprint and Flash everything.
I experienced this for the first time the other day. Im still basically just doing the story, not running fates or anything, but if while Im running around I see a fate Ill jump on it
So the other day I was in Coerthas and the three part fate that ends with the dragon I think named Svara? popped up. I was doing the first two and it was pretty laggy. Then the last part where you actually fight Svara started and there were so many players in it nothing would load. It would almost look empty for a time. Honestly Svara popped up one time for really about three seconds and I thought "oh cool, theres the boss" and then it disappeared. Now yeah I fought a few of the lesser dragons and got some decent experience but I want to play more for fun than experience points. I would of been happier if I got to actually fight the dragon and got no experience than what actually happened.
Anyway just thought Id share my story of lag
Flash is your friend.
FATEs is a system which is used and abused and we are starting to see the disadvantages of it to the point of, "why should I take part with so many lolplayers crowding my screen and not receive anything??".
Maybe over time, FATEs will become less popular while more content is introduced. FATEs like Odin and Bahamut will have competition from other NMs such as Fafnir and Aspid( the ground-kings of FFxi ). Other cameos like Garland (FF1) or Chaos would make a great FATE. Bringing back the NM wyrms like Tiamat and Vrtra. Another NM would be Cyberus which I speculate is going to be a FATE too.
If all the HNM FATEs become over-crowded, I don't know what other solution would be needed but to limit the system to the 'ol fashion claim-lock.
~'\[[_LEGACY_]]/'~TENTs because solo-friendly content forces me to want one!
