    directX error

    Hi.

I updated from win 8 to win 8.1 (damn problematic. messed up my computer ). Now when i try to launch FF i get a directX error (100000....) and the game just crashes. I reinstalled the game, however it still gives me the same error. Any suggestions in this matter?

alt+printscreen to screenshot the error window
    paste it into paint.net/mspaint
save and upload to a image service and post it here.

legacy directX files may not be registered properly or something. Might try getting the DX9 Redistributable to see if that resolves it. They have an offline one (should have a link down near the end of the details section) that is handy to keep tucked away just in case you need to do it more than once--it's about a 100MB download.

    Ok. Did some more experiments.
So it works fine with my Inbuilt intel HD, but does not once i switch the game to my radeon 7650M. Tried re-installing the drivers for the radeon... still the same. Ok. I'll try to reinstall DX9, however if it works for one, means that it is there, no?

Squa11_Leonhart - no point in taking a screenshot. is just a small box saying "A fatal DirextX error has occured (10000000)".

Edit: When i try to install DX9, it just says that i have a newer version already.

Sounds like you are using the web installer. The offline redistributable unpacks and registers the older DLL's regardless--it's an old fix to try that goes back to the original Vista releases. Doesn't always resolve things, but it's a relatively painless and quick thing to try.

If it's happening with only one vid card, there may be something going on with either the drivers, a setting, or the card/environment itself. Something could simply be glitching in the software/firmware, or something could be tripping a GPU reset (voltage dip, heat spike, etc.). I'd double check that it's getting adequate voltage and cooling by monitoring it's health with something like GPU-z while in game to see if you spot anything suspicious there. If it all looks good, running a thorough driver clean and perhaps backing up to an older stable driver release may resolve things (SE is famous for not getting along with the latest and greatest).

Otherwise, trim the settings down to basically put lower strain on the card and see if it gets more stable, then ramp things up one by one until it trips up. If you find a particular setting that causes it to go bonkers, submit a report to ATI or your Vendor to see if they can get on a bug-fix for it.

Meh... all the problems started with that damn 8.1 update. However it's weird... cuz i'm running exactly the same drivers as I was before (oldest possible version) - if i put something different the drivers go totally crazy.

Tried a manual install of DX9. Still the same problem. Actually discovered that i can't run anything (different games) with the radeon. So there is something srsly wrong. My guess windows is doing something bad with the switchable graphics (had something similar with win 8 beta).

I'm already running FF on low settings. Hard part is - i can't even get the game started with it. Once i press "play" it just dies.

Well there is no reason to contact ATI actually. Cuz what ATI says is that they are not responsible for the graphics drivers in laptops. It is each vendors responsibility to make and distribute their drivers for laptops... and dell's not gonna do it

Meh... looks like the simplest solution would be to roll back to Win8.0 or just reinstall win.

Edit: turns out you can't just roll back since win 8.1 is practically a new installation of win.

Hi, just thought I would add I am also getting this error, for me its random and I can play the game for hours and all of a sudden I get the A fatal directx error pops up on screen and quits the game. At other time I could be on for 10 mins or less and the same occurs.

I also am using Win8 my PC is an I3 with a geforce 660ti with all latest graphics drivers and win updates. I have installed direct x 9 and just in case and even under clocked my GFX just to test it but, alas the same thing.

I am concerned that this is a game problem as my brother is also having these problems randomly.

Check Device Manager, your card might be Code 43, which seems to be happening on both Radeon and Geforce hardware after a Win8.1 upgrade install.

Investigations are ongoing, but it might be a bug in the windows 8.1 version of the pci kernel driver with certain platforms.

Sorry, your issue is not the same, take it to a different thread.
