    Window flickering and whiting out

I have been experiencing numerous technical difficulties with Final Fantasy 14 after the patches this week. This one began a few days ago and has not stopped with the hot fixes.

    I play FF14 windowed with a controller.
During play, the FF14 window will flicker in and out of being the "active window." This only happens sporadically and for a fraction of a second, but the entire border of the window changes color when this happens. It is EXTREMELY annoying on the eyes.

In addition, sometimes the entire window locks up for several seconds while this happens. The "window is not responding" message will pop up across the window. After a few seconds, the game appears to operate as normal.

Sometimes when these errors occur, I hear Windows make a sound as though a USB device were being plugged in or unplugged.

I have not changed the devices used by my computer. This error started happening after one of the patches. It only occurs while playing FF14.

I have tried cycling out different USB products, thinking one may be shorting and the odd behavior might be due to a device actually failing and kicking back in. However, I have experienced the error after cycling out each device.

I have the same exact issue. I notice the screen locks up the most when I'm switching from window to window. i.e. From XIV to Firefox and back.

given you have an x58 platform computer, you may need to increase the voltages of the ICH and IOH from 1.1 to 1.15 or 1.2 (just the ICH/IOH, not the PCI-E signalling voltages, which are 1.5v)

usb issues caused by lack of voltage on this platform is common.

another possibility is a faulty internal usb card reader

I don't experience any USB problems when FF14 is not running. This is the one and only program that any of these problems take place in, which leads me to believe it is not a hardware issue. If one of my devices was dying/faulty, I would be experiencing something when the game is not running, I would think?

I don't touch the voltage settings on my computer, and I have no idea what ICH or IOH are.

    Not necessarily.

When the game is running the ICH(Southbridge) and IOH(x58 northbridge) are put under strain and a low or unstable voltage can do t hings like making usb devices disconnect.

It takes 10 seconds to google what these are, which would've been quicker then saying you have no idea what they are.
You should learn, x58 mobo's require proper configuration to run them properly, especially as they get on in age.

Source for the voltage causing devices to disconnect? The closest thing I have found is some BIOS revisions can cause USB problems on particular x58 boards. The boards in question were eVGA, though, and mine is MSI. Not saying "you're wrong," but after a good 20 minutes of reading and googling, I'm not finding what you're talking about.

the logitech forums are one location you will find a number of users curing USB disconnects by upping the ICH voltages,

increasing the ioh voltage is just to keep a heavily loaded PCI-E host bus well fed.
