Sorta the way i explained is how weapons worked in FFXI, they had Job Limitations. Well, in FFXIV's case, Jobs have Class Limitations.

However, that is not to say they are to be tied down to a single class though. Thief could use hose weapons, and be limited to those three, not just Pugilist, or just Gladiator.

they are going to rebalalance classes so you can cross class less skill of import, so selction of class will matter more.

Lets say thaum is a whm, having gimped cures because it is on con will suck, or if it is blm, having gimped nukes because they are on sub will suck.

A gladiator thf using pugilists skills wont be as good a thief with long cooldowns, and no access to higher tier blindsides/featherfoots, or whatever the case may be.

It would probably be a good idea if jobs had a couple classes associated with them. but we ll see.

Rather than being advanced versions of classes, we would like players to think of jobs as specialized playing styles optimized for partying.
To me, it sounds like they want us to use them as specialized playing styles optimized for partying, even though, literally, they will be advanced versions of classes. "Don't think of them as being advanced versions of classes, even though they are... Think of them as specialized playing styles optimizes for partying". I know those aren't his words, but Matsui also did not say "Jobs are NOT advanced versions of classes." If what he meant is the former, hopefully they'll have a good balance of what skills and can be cross equipped.

I don't plan to be a White Mage running around using my fists, or a warrior hitting enemies with a branch with some leaves on it. I guess there are a few that would. But there are some identifiable combinations, as the OP has said, such as a Gun Ranger. Dark knight using Swords, Great Swords, Axes, etc.

It seems to me the MMO side of FF likes to keep weapon specializations within jobs. I've played them all, and I know that there is a much larger selection of weapons for "jobs" in all the traditional games, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will or should carry over to the MMO versions. I think they didn't want to see a group of Great Axe wielding Warriors, Dragoons, Samurai, White Mages, and Dancers partying together in FFXI, which is why they imposed limitations and skill caps per level.

I'm willing to be they'll bring that over when it comes to jobs/classes. I would think it will still be rather limited. I hope though, for the sake of those like Cairdeas and others, it will at minimum allow a few classes per job. Maybe along the lines of Paladin being unlockable when Sword, Shield, or Great Sword (when it becomes available) reach the applicable level. Ranger being unlockable by a Musketeer or an Archer.

    My two cents.

The game is still based on an Armoury system meaning you are going to be bound by a weapon period, there will be variations I am sure of weapon type but generally like a class a job will have a weapon type to define it. There is nothing boring about that, I understand wanting to use different weapon types on each class but this isn't FFXI so I doubt that will happen. A Musketeer is going to be limited to guns, a ninja will be limited to Katanas etc. I think what you was getting as is you don't want a job to be bound to the exact same weapon type as your class was, which I really doubt that would be the case, but with the way he worded stuff it is hard to tell. By saying its not an advanced class but a specialization it could fall into any easily mean that. But I doubt they would make Corsair or Musketeer only able to use a bow, that wouldn't make sense or a bard to use whatever weapon he is given. (Even though a bard should be able to fight and not just utilize a instrument).

We just have to wait for more info.

So it pretty much stands like this:

You are [This Class] >> What [Role/Job] do you want to be, you can choose from [This, or That, but not any others]

WAH WAH, I DUN WANT PREREQUISITES FOR JOBS. WAH WAH.

That's all I heard from this thread. Seriously? You want this game to be "easy"? Get out.

That said, I'm more interested in finding out if Dragoon will become an unlockable job for Lancers. :3

I think a bunch of people here are unable to see the forest because all of those darn pesky trees keep getting in the way.

The job system is nothing more then a identifier of a specific skill set.
    end of line.
