of course
You can be a pugalist(no job)
a Pugalist(monk)
or a pugalist(insert possible other job here)
again, this is a specialization system, each will provide a roll for said pugalist
not create something entirely different out of them
the roll of monk may be tanking
the roll of lets say, black belt/martial artist could be DD

Right, but that agrees with class =/= job. Class gives you lots of different abilities, you pick and chose to play a certain role. A job forces you into a role while using a weapon. So if mnk were put on pugilist, you would be restricted to what SE would define as how a monk would play (also getting bonus abilities) but if you play pugilist with no job, there are multiple roles you can do.

You can choose which Job/Role you want to play as your Pugilist.
............... / Monk (Tank- Defense, HP, Counter-Attacks)
Pugilist.... - Black Belt (DD- Direct Attacks, Status Ailment Abilities, Ex. Disarm, Stun, Para.)
............... \ White Monk (DD/Healer/Support- Low Damage Output, TP Healing Abilities, Attack-Defense Buffs)

Personally I hope they put in any class / job combination. BLM/THF may not have been optimal for partying but was great for farming. As was BLM/RNG if you needed widescan, BLM/WAR if you're playing with a friend and need provoke, War/BLM if you needed warp (or if you wanted to play a poor mans DRK) etc.
Not every job combination was amazing but a lot of them had uses. Hopefully they give each job something unique so even if its not a great combination, you still have a reason to throw it on every once in a while.

I just wanted to quote this post 'cause I liked the format. You can choose which Job/Role you want to play as your Pugilist.

You can wear a buckler with a bow. Using it is another matter since it requires you to be actively blocking, something you can't do if you're steadying your bow to aim.
Each job is unlocked by one class. That does not rule out each class unlocking multiple jobs.
While likely correct, I don't know that we have enough information to rule this possibility out.
Does the fact that Matsui said that "Jobs are not Advanced Classes" mean anything then?
And besides, even if you are a Monk, you are still using a Hand-to-hand weapon which also means you're a Pugilist. lol So that already explains that Jobs are not replacements.
