The Job and class system together, you can define your role while using the weapon of choice, considering the weapon actually fits the class. aka, paladin probably wouldn't want to use a wand or bow. Class ranks could also still determine your HP and MP leves to some extent, so equipping a wand on with paladin job would make you have shitty hp, thus be a shitty tank.
