Job = skill set optimized for partying.
    Roll...Role = tank, healer, dps

What do you think a Set of skills optimized for partying is? Its your Role being Defined for you.

A White Mage will get access to a bunch of cure spells, esuna spells, and defense spells. It'll be a Healer. So there for White Mage's Role is Healer.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

So if your role and skills are defined for you there no reason to lock you to a specific weapon.

Your weapon is locked to your class.
Your class (may be) locked to your job.
Your job is locked to a set of skills.
Your set of skills is locked to your role.

I'll try it the other way too.

Your Class is locked to your Weapon.
Your Job is locked to your Class. (Maybe)
Your Skills are locked to your Job. (The skills that were mentioned in the post)
Your Role is locked to your Skills.

Why do you keep using Class and Weapon as if they are two different things?

Anyway if thats how you want it thats fine.

    How I'd prefer it is

You Equip your weapon and are identified as being a user of that weapon.

When you level your weapon skill up to the appropriate rank you learn to specialize in a specialized role.

This role is given a name and called your Job (Job and Role are synonyms after all.)

Once you master this Role/Job you are now able to equip any weapon you want and perform the same role as long as your skill with said new weapon is on part with the requirements of the Role.

Wow... I'm not sure how much simpler I can make it for you. Gimme a second to think about it, my GF is a preschool teacher I'm gonna give her a call real quick.

You Equip your weapon (sword) and are identified as being a user of that weapon (Gladiator).

When you level your weapon skill up to the appropriate rank you learn to specialize in a specialized role (Job).

This role is given a name and called your Job (Job and Role are synonyms after all.) (word games aren't needed)

Once you master this Role/Job you are now able to equip any weapon you want and perform the same role as long as your skill with said new weapon is on part with the requirements of the Role. This last part probably won't happen for the sake of Class Uniqueness.
Is a Goblin Longsword a Gladiator? They are two different things. A weapon and a Class

Like i said earilier, your job may not be locked to your class, or vice versa. Class is still changed by equpping a different weapon, job stays the same.

The job system - that series-defining trademark - will be implemented in FINAL FANTASY XIV (details such as specific jobs TBA). Quests to unlock each job will become available once you have reached a certain rank in the corresponding class.
Rather than being advanced versions of classes, we would like players to think of jobs as specialized playing styles optimized for partying. While playing as a particular job will render you unable to equip certain actions of other classes, you will be compensated with access to exclusive actions, which can be acquired through quests.

In practice, players will find the existing classes effective when playing solo or in certain party setups. Jobs, however, will shine in party situations where specific skill sets are demanded. Now, you didn’t hear this from me, but there are also rumors circulating that quests for obtaining job-exclusive equipment are also in the pipes.
We at the development team are currently hard at work on the job system, and expect to have details to share with you soon.
And the above underline says what i said as well. you will lose access to certain class skills and/or spells, while gaining new ones specific to the job.
