The former SP system as you may have gathered if you saw the link rentahamster provided was a system much like gaining skill-ups with weapons in FFXI, albeit slightly more elaborate. Basically, you would have chances of getting varying amounts of SP based on several things, such as how much damage you guarded, how much damage you dealt(which was based on enemy rank, your rank, weapon strength and durability), etc, and nearly EVERY ability you had gave you a chance to gain SP. There were times I'd be in Mun-Tuy leveling in a 15 man party against toads or efts where I would easily amass near 500 SP, and this was without battle regimen whoring. Back then the game was fun.

The reason I as well as a few others who have posted here liked it is because it rewarded you for playing well: keeping your gear updated and repaired, dealing the highest DMG possible and such. It was also great because there was NO WAY you could leech SP in a party since it was directly related to how much work you put in individually. Ironically, this was in my opinion one of the more compelling and rewarding aspects of combat, and since they removed it, they've had the "joy" of dealing with complaints that combat is too simplistic now. I've had a hard time picking this game back up since November because of that...

However, people who complained about it weren't entirely wrong. Basically, while nuking would give you good SP as a mage, healing and tanking not so much apparently(although I would get nice SP using provoke and taking damage). They basically took the easy way out(and now I know it's because their number algorithms are busted to ***) and not only did they make static SP that is not only in small amounts but very easy to leach, but in doing so made combat very unrewarding to a lot of people.
