I was gonna get the 6990, but got 2 5970 2GB video cards running in crossfire. I was reviewing the specs and one 5970 2GB cards blows the 6990 out of the water when it comes to texturing and AA. but I run the game at 1920x 1080 with all settings on max, get constant 60 FPS through FRAPS. I can't get it any higher than 60 FPS, I think FFXIV will not allow above 60. I only have high system specs because I do game design, and it helps when modeling in Maya for quicker rendering.

Yea, there is an in game cap at 60fps....I was gonna get the 6990, but got 2 5970 2GB video cards running in crossfire. 2 x 5970's is insane....
4 GPU's is ri-dunk-ulous
Happy happy joy joy

I am also hitting it with:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T @4.2GHZ
MEMORY: 16GB 1600MHZ
VIDEO: 2 ATI HD5970's in Crossfire, 1 nVidia GT250 on side for PhysX
HDD: 1 SSD 128 GB Sata 6Gb, 1 TB HDD for backup
OS: Windows 7 Professional x64
as i posted earlier so it runs smooth, until my water cooling decides to pop out on me lol

I've got a PII 965be at 3.8 on airI am also hitting it with:

and only 8GB or 1600MHz
I DID, however, just pick up a 990FX AM3+ gigabyte MOBO though...
I was gonna upgrade to an X6, but I'm thinking I can easily hold off until Bulldozer in Q4
I've been staying with the 5870 because the 6970 is better, but I'd say not enough to notice, especially not with a single 1920x1080 monitor.... I'd definitely pick up a 5970 if I found one at a good price though...
Its still one of the top dogs out there... which is crazy seeing how long it's been out....
I guess technology stopped moving forward as fast as it was 5 or 10 years ago

I wish I could afford a $ 700 GPU. `~`

I'm not really sure.
What "cheaper" GPUs would you guys recommend as an upgrade to someone to get better performance in XIV. Currently have a non spec 5850 @ 925core. I'm just not satisfied with my performance in XIV.

Well the 5850 is a pretty good card.... What CPU and how much RAM? DO you have the newest AMD drivers?
With AMD it is HD6990>HD5970>HD6970>HD5870>your HD5850
With nvidia is GTX590>GTX580>GTX570>your HD5850
(The 5970 and 5870 are not in production so you would have to buy used or find some obscure amazon partner that has some left)
If you're only using 1 monitor and 1920x1080 is your highest resolution, I'd suggest the AMD Radeon HD 6970 or The Nvidia GTX 570.... both between $300-$350 new on newegg...
A 5870 could be found pretty cheap on Ebay but is not a worlds difference from your current card
Then you could always find a 5850 on Ebay and go crossfire... I'd personally rather have 1 card that can do the job as opposed to 2, but thats a personal preference

RAM: 8GB DDR3
OS: Win7x64 ultimate
Would either of those cards be worth it to upgrade from what I have? Ideally I'd like to be able to run in full resolution with AO off and any level of FSAA, 2 or 4x would be great, at a consistent frame rate of 40+ with no spikes.
Checking AMD drivers now. . .
EDIT: 11.5
Thanks for your help btw.
