Crashing on load screen

Updated to windows 8.1.

Am now constantly (100% of the time) crashing after choosing my character, and hitting the load screen.

I tried reinstalling the game, which helped briefly, but the problem popped back up after about an hour.

Was working perfectly fine before... can't tell if it's the new patch, or windows 8.1 that's causing the problem.

Fixes I've tried so far: Reinstalling the game, unplugging all USB (cept mouse/keyboard), updating and rolling back video drivers, countless restarts, swapping between fullscreen/windowed mode, adjust graphic settings... pretty much everything that would be obvious.

what version of 8.1?

other users have upgraded without problems, bar a few users who installed the N version and could no longer get videos to play.
