What you were doing when the issue occurred:
Trying to either select/target a monster to kill, OR trying to target another party member to heal them.

The Problem:
Other player's summons & companions are selectable/targetable to other people within a party or while just doing a Fate solo.

Question for Square-Enix:
Why are character summons & companions selectable to other players? This creates an extreme problem to all classes except for the player who has the summon/companion.
Tanks experience targeting problems when there are multiple monsters and time is crutial to retrieve hate. Healers can't target the correct player to heal before hit points get too low. Damage Dealers can't select the correct monster either if a pet is blocking the monster.

Resolution:
Make Summons & Companions non-targetable to other party members or other people during a Fate.

Exceptable pet target times:
During PvP.
