Every time i have asked a Retainer Arranger they have laughed at me and said i was too weak. Maybe that is because i havent asked in my "home" city Urdah yet, maybe i will be able to get one there.... since i am up to level 32 now. I hope so, gonna run out of room in my inventoyr soon...esp since i started gatheirng as a miner. Great thread lots of good info here.

You get your first retainer during the main story questline. It is not only your level

It's unlocked in the main story quest Scions of the Seventh Dawn. That comes right after a series of three dungeons (Sastasha, Tam Tara, and Copperbell Mines). You're more than high enough level for it. (I think it's about level 17 or so, though I was 20 when I got there.) If you don't have it yet, it looks like you got sidetracked from the main storyline quests and will need to get back to those to start unlocking features.

The retainer helps a lot.

I leveled all of my DoH and DoL at the same time as my main class, and ran into both inventory and armory issues. I give my retainer items that may be useful for crafting but I don't use often. Keeping my DoH very close to eachother in level makes it easier to manage gear since they use almost the same set, and I convert or vendor old gear.

Ya just got the Walking Sands Mission last night and I am now authorized to have my own retainers. I will be nice to them, I see we can pick from various types. any idea which are which re the cities they come from? i saw a short one, a tall pale one and a more normal one who i think is from Gridania. I dont know the race names for Final Fantasy yet.

Retainer race/gender/appearance/height/body size have no effect on what they do - they're basically just an extra item cupboard for you/shop front on the Market Board, so go with whatever you like the most.

Also, it wouldn't matter which city they come from as all three cities's ones do the same thing.

OK but i do plan to be nice to mine and treat them kindly if there is any way to do so. Looking forward to meeting them and adding them to my team. thanks for the replies and for this great thread. I was not sure if we get a preview of the Retainer's picture before we select them..hence my question about the different types, i will do a search to see if there is info on them on the WWW.

You get to define your retainer's appearance yourself using the character creation interface. All the same appearance options you'd have creating a new character.
