I went back to windows 8 and everything is working again, i will be installing the non N version of 8.1 later today when it is released. i will keep you all posted.

There's a "Media Feature Pack" download available for Windows 8 N and KN versions. It's mentioned under the MSDN Knowledge Base Article 2703761. Have you tried installing that for your Windows 8.1 N?
