Something must be wrong there, I sometimes get this ping all the way from Brazil.

    drop Comcast or get wtfast.

Comcast is like the biggest net ripoff in the USA

Also you assume wrong, you are not far from monteral at all, that is a 35-50 ping, same with any decent ISP in the north, central, and east USA. Have a friend on the SE side and got 35 ping. Going to the west sucks.

Depends on the game but 50 and under is supposed to be smooth for anything, 100+ is high for how this game is coded though. (though you still have delays at 0 ping because they put delays on abilities for some reason)

That is interesting. I never noticed the ping section there. According to that my ping is between 200 and 220 now O.o, while ping plotter shows an avarage 170...

PingPlotter freeware is also a nifty tool that does min/max/avg ping with tracert showing packet loss at each router hop, and has nifty graphs.

All you need to do is plug in the FFXIV IP (199.91.189.25 from above) and enjoy. A while back I let it run each night at different times. I'm with Time Warner and the last hop out of their network space tbone.rr.com to atlas.cogentco.com routers is dropping between 2% up to a whopping 49% of packets, depending on time of day. The final hops to Montreal data center (via mtl.iweb.com) have no loss for me.

Good thing I'm switching ISPs very soon to a different fiber backbone than Time Warner's Road Runner. I bet much of the "server lag" people complain about is their own ISP, or the routing through eastern NA right now, dropping packets. I've seen definite lag on server side events as well, like demon wall push back delayed 5 seconds with battle continuing normally, so their servers aren't perfect either.

Ping is that much of a deal on MMO's, I have played MMO's with a ping of 250-300 and it still has been fine. Now if this were a FPS i would agree with you.

So is 170 ping bad for FFXIV? Because that's what my ping is and I have zero problems with dodging aoe attacks like in Titan HM.

I sit around 200 ping to the Japanese servers from Canada, hasn't bothered me much but I'm not much of a raider so...

The effects can be felt in all activities but it's pretty slight.

By the by I ping around 100 to the NA servers.
