Monk's are by far the best DPS to work with once they have the class down. My favourite DPS class. Anyone who is dismissing them are missing the point. The entire job system is balance. You shouldn't be comparing melee to ranged, because they both serve a different group purpose. The best teams have both. All ranged just never works well, and all melee can work, but not well either. (Actually given the choice I would choose all melee, but it still dicey). Now I will say Archer is easy mode. I mean, super super easy mode. Whereas PGL has proved to be one of the hardest classes I have tried.
And if a BRD is "doing it right" they'll destroy you in damage. Good examples uhh... any mob with an aoe attack centered on itself or player. Titan HM is 'much' faster with BRDs for DDs as they can continue to damage the boss while dodging bombs/plumes etc. There's simply no way a melee DPS is going to compete with a BRD. The demon wall in AK is another example. With repels and such, no one is going to beat BRDs. In fact, most PUG BRDs can kill the wall before the bees even spawn (without even using a LB obviously).
Any fights with adds where you need to switch targets, BRD is also going to pull ahead. They don't have to run back and forth between mobs. They just need to switch targets. Basically, 90% of the boss fights in the game favor BRD, not to mention trash mobs which you can engage as soon as the tank pulls (assuming they don't suck).

Bards need to play songs that will drop their damage by 20%... a MNK in our group IS the top DPS at the moment. Good players make a class good.Can someone explain to me why (other than our limit break) any group should take a MNK/DRG over a SMN/BRD.
They do about the same (or more) damage, and have free movement to avoid AOE's better.
What realistic reason is there to bring melee dps other than friends or drops?

Well we've got 2 Major patches planned within the next 4 months and it'll have to probably wait until 2.2 so it doesn't make MNK/DRG broken in PVP...It is well known already that DRG and MNK are at a disadvantage Risk vs. Reward -wise in combat and it can be argued that they consistently put out lower DPS than other DPS jobs in many boss fights due to boss-centered AoE abilities which force melee out of prime dps range. I would expect to see some buffs to melee DPS in the future. However, SE is currently putting out larger fires than minor balance issues. See: End-game content, DF Load, RMT, hacks, various bugs/exploits, etc.
Yes, there are balance issues, no, they are not major/game-breaking, yes, other, more important stuff will take priority for now. You can expect melee DPS to get balanced, but don't hold your breath... it may be a couple months.
2.2 is currently planned for February (likely 22nd when the PS4 beta starts)
People who don't really fully understand their class should kind of stay out of threads like this. Made it all the way to 50 without even knowing AOTD takes a specific stance to silence? Jeez...I don't feel this way at all and I love my Monk.
The only problem I have is a Monk's lack of utility in Coil turn 2 where people are trying to run with at least 2 BRD's for silencing. But I feel like a MNK would be even better at this. The only problem is that my Arm of the Destroyer is not even remotely as reliable as an Archer's silences. I have no idea why this is. I know for a fact that it is not accuracy as I had far more accuracy than the BRDs in my group. Lag? Maybe but in some cases I would get 2 AoD's off before the cast bar was finished.
Problem with Turn 2 ADS silencing for monk is that it loves doing high voltage immediately following an AOE like repelling cannons or ballast. There is normally consistent timer for the nodes doing high voltage but transition phases when ADS is gaining abilities throws off the timer for him so it makes it harder to stay in opo-opo form for it(can only stay in that form for 12s).
bard only needs to smash ur face into the keyboard and u get a rotation with high dmg...meanwhile as a melee u gotta follow a long *** rotation, while u dodge and move around when something pops up.
oh and thats not counting the side attacks and back attacks...that if for some bad luck or lag...the boss move just a little bit u miss the attack buff and u gotta redo everything again since rotations are tight.
