Well, just a thought. We are on page 25 now and this thread has not been bumped to tank or general thread. So I think this might make it safe to say that the DRK is going to be DPS. Yay!

I think SE won't say anything unless they are committed to releasing Dark Knight soon.

I main BLM, but DRK has always been my second favorite job in XI. I've been so excited for it I can barely contain myself and that pic ^ made me SQUEE.
But I figure that they'll make DRK a DPS. I just don't see it being a tnk and I honestly don't want it to be a tnk haha. But I'm ready to Drain some bitches and use a cool scythe.
But I'm open to whatever as long as I get DRK.
I figure they'll make SAM a tnk job.
honestly I liked the Scythe as a weapon, it makes the dark knight look more badass, like a grim reaper. Im curious as how they will make DRK different than a dragoon class. Both are melee and burst dps. Would be a neat idea if the DRK created an aura buff for the entire party based on what stat the DRK absorbed from the mob. ex, Absorb Str, would provide the party with a STR buff, only 1 type of attribute can be absorbed at a given time, this creates interesting gameplay, depending on your party make up. Of course they will still retain their soul eater ability as a CD for high dmg burst, and Drain for life steal.
Probably the 20,000th time it's been said in this thread, but the grim reaper does not fight with the scythe. He reaps (read: harvests) the souls of the passed so they can forge on to the afterlife, a role referred to as a psychopomp. The grim reaper is a farmer, yo.
Dark Knight is necessarily burst DPS to begin with as that is the essence of the Darkside ability. HP drain is ultimately essential as well, because it's an absolute nightmare to have an extra job to heal all the time. Both filling the same role honestly doesn't too much matter in the first place. There are only so many ways you can hit an enemy. More important is making the class interesting to play.
Overpowered as all hell. Stat absorption would have be limited to individual.
A scythe is a farming tool, not a weapon. Historical uses of the scythe as an improvised weapon have the blade turned upward into a backward glaive. It's not very effective compared to proper weapon; it's mainly a tool of farmer uprisings, like the long-enduring image of a pitchfork.
I would like to see DKs as melee debuffers in Lancer/DRG weight armor, with acceptable DPS that can spike with HP sacrifice-based moves. Probably deal less damage than monk, but have skills or spells that would make enemies easier to take down. On parties where the debuffs won't be as useful, the could focus on the spike damage while they have healers to fuel their skills to keep them on an even keel with other DPS.
I like the idea of hp loss to fuel a skill because it has a risk component that will keep you from spamming those skills. I would also see where a WHM or SCH would go utterly crazy and hate DKs in teams, however, so maybe it could have its own HP restoration skill to keep the edge off the healers, if it can be done in a balanced way.
I would imagine a LOT of GCD skills involving the weapon with instants being hp fueled.
That's just me, though.

It could be a job for Gladiator/Thaumaturge.
Level 30 job skill could be a stance that converts enmity generating skills into skills that create stacks of 'soul' (name could use work) that do damage over time to you but increase your attack power. Dropping the stance would drop all your stacks. The rest of the job skills could do interesting things with utilizing them, consuming them for big spike damage or self heal etc.
I'd also give the job a combo ability off of Riot blade that does decent damage but without the additional enmity of Halone so that they can keep up there attacks without creating more stacks. It'd be a balancing act to play, and very hard for the devs to balance but I think it could be a lot of fun.

I think Dark Knight could also play as a melee counterpart to Bard as DPS/support. Rather than group buffs, though, it would focus on enemy debuffs.honestly I liked the Scythe as a weapon, it makes the dark knight look more badass, like a grim reaper. The could also have an ability that converts health to TP.... or a trait that allows you to use health in place of TP when TP hits 0.

Whichever weapon they decide to go with, I hope to god they make the scythe or greatsword massive and oversized on the lalafell. Did anybody see the greatsword models and animations on the guild wars 2 asurans? They look amazing compared to the pathetic little toothpicks that the Tarus wielded in FFXI.
:/ i've heard so much of new jobs/classes but there aren't any leaks or anything, no upcoming patch notes, i just want to see proof that there will be Dark knight. there aren't any two handed swords in this game, or duel weilding...Who does that? there just has to be upcoming jobs/classes that have these skills, otherwise everyone will get bored and just put the game down and play something else.
