What is a toon?

When someone throws a fit over use of the word "toon" to denote an MMO character, I picture Dwight Shrute trying in vain to make people call him Assistant Regional Manager instead of Assistant to the Regional Manager.


Do you jump down people's throats for saying "aggro" instead of "enmity," too? Do you know what a "server" is, or can you only understand "worlds"? Hope nobody starts talking about DPS instead of DD...

Every MMO under the sun tries to introduce its own unique nomenclature to describe the same concepts. Some terms stick, others don't. The only reason anyone objects to the word "toon" is because they don't think it sounds "serious" enough for the particular game they take way too seriously. Meanwhile, they seemingly never take people to task for naming their characters "Blood Farts" or "Tony Snark."
