Grinding = continuously playing the class just for ranking up.

A further tip. If you are grinding for ranks and not specific materials, LOWER your perception stat (and do not equip earthen favor).

Higher perception = greater chance of getting rare items.
Unlike boring and common items, rare items break easier -> More likely to fail the gathering attempt -> less SP.
Ergo, lower perception = more reliable SP gains.

The downside to this of course is that mining becomes even more boring.

@Catapult thank you very much for the idea. I am going to try it out to target specific items

I don't know if lowering your perception will lower the rank of harvested mats, which is different from the QUALITY of the material that you harvest. Lowering your perception probably just gives you the same item mix you always would have, just more NQs.

I may indeed stand corrected. From the lodestone:
Gathering: Reduces the depletion rate of the Remainder gauge.
Perception: Increases a player's chance to find higher-quality items.
    Output:
Increases the amount of times a miner or botanist can gather at a single point, as well as reduces the amount of time a fisher must wait for a bite.
So I suppose it depends on your definition of quality. I had assumed quality = rarity, which now you mention it may not be the best interpretation compared to +1/2/3.

That being said, sacrificing perception for gathering and output can only assist your overall SP haul.

    Quality is +1/2/3.

To avoid certain items the best is to follow the tips they give and move the depth gauge the opposite way. Some examples are iron ore and those raw jewels...the depletion they cuse is terrible grind-wise so the best would be, since they often are at deeper areas, to move gauge up so you might have them much rarier.

Also, being in a spot where you get there "you'sense the [item] right where you are" of a common item would maximize the chances of obtaining it...having iron sand, pyrite or copper ore in this situation helps alot.

Also, its nice that the item dificulty is the very same no matter the grade...if you mine a pyrite in glory area (coerthas, grade 4 if not mistaken), it will deplete your remainder there just as fast as it would if you mine it in black brush area (thanalan, grade 1)...so seeking low rank items is the best way to improve your sp/hr if you don't care about drops.

I keep my stats balanced and mine for the gil items silver at my range ive made almost 6mil of that entirely plus occasional gold hits and mythril. There is good money to be made that way as well. So the grind is worth it when gil intensive items come out, which i am sure they will eventually for now bank ur gil

No money in iron any more. On Figaro, nuggets are now going for as low as 350gil where they used to go for as high as 1500gil. Plus, silver is the BSM grind for 45-50, so it's becoming more in demand.

As dangerous an area as it is, Treespeak is the place to go for this stuff. And gives good leveling. Two notches from the top of your slider tends to work well - you'll also get gemstones.

On an unrelated matter, get yourself a Gridanian Doublet if you're grinding. For leves, wear the Lominsan Doublet Vest. +20 to Output or Gathering respectively from Rank 25.
Gridanian Doublet is best output in the game. Jerkins don't get better than the Lominsan Doublet Vest till the much higher ranks. Love that company gear.
