IIRC you could run and cast in 1.0 before they added the combo/job system no? Not sure anymore. You know how moving while casting cancels your spell? In 1.x you just couldn't move while you were casting. AoEs you have to dodge weren't as omnipresent as they are in 2.0, but there were still a lot of boss fights you had to be very careful when you cast or else you'd be locked in place while an AoE came in to bash your brains out. In the hard Ifrit fight after the first stage, you had to wait until Ifrit had just done a special move to cast, and then you'd only cast one spell, because that's how long the safety window was. He spammed those special moves, so you had a lot of opportunities to cast, but you had to do it at the right point.
Graphics were a lot better (repetitive but better, whoever cannnot see this is blind really), also it had some AWESOME ctuscenes but cersion 2.0 has its own awesomness.
I would like a mix :P
Actually, I agree.
I played 1.0 and the thing that hit me the most when I came back to ARR was that my clothes, my gear and every monster I saw was bland and felt very badly designed.
I wish they at least kept the option FOR higher quality textures in game as it drives me insane looking at these cardboard looking cotton shirts.
I'm still sad that we''ll never know what would have been if Tanaka could complete and polish his original vision for XIV.
I'll always have the feel that, from what we could glimpse, it would have been a really different kind of MMO, way better than ARR in many ways, but oh well.
Not meaning that I'm not enjoying ARR, but I'm so tired of the EQ/WoW like MMO's everywhere... even if they are really polished...
No. They weren't.

To be honest, I wish they put the camera panning back into the cutscenes, that was my single pet peeve for 2.0 cutscenes.
You really should specify. Character/armor models were a lot better, sure.
But if you can't see how much better 2.0's environment designs, lighting, and textures are compared to 1.0's muddy mess, then you're the blind one.

1.0 had so much potential if it was just ironed out. The original team's vision was heavy on community and the reliance of battle classes on gathering and crafting classes and vice versa. It had definite sandbox elements in it and no theme park to it. It was just a completely different game than ARR.I'm still sad that we''ll never know what would have been if Tanaka could complete and polish his original vision for XIV.

I have fonder memories of 1.0 because inside the game most people acted with a basic form of respect despite the beta forums being a mess. In 2.0 it has drawn in people who have never played a Final Fantasy game before, this has made the game a little more harsh when it comes to interacting with other players.
1.0 UI was well... if memory serves me right, the menu came from the right of the screen. I actually didn't like it. It was nothing like ffxi and sometimes it lagged.
After 1.25 things ran more smoothly. I adapted, why? It's an MMO, another world you need to adapt!
1.0 was introduced with the stamina gauge in the battle system. This resulted in you mashing your actions actively without auto-attack. While this was annoying, is was adjusted with auto-attack around the 1.25 update.
Combos began to feel like a breeze to execute when you action icon would blink/flash and most of them were influenced by positioning your character correctly(which was fun for mnk).
Oh, crafting and gathering felt like a worthy class and was more fun to play.
THis was Tanakas project and SEs baby. It was basically FFxi in HIGH-REZ using a different name. It was suppose to cater to MMORPGers who loved Final Fantasy in its own right. Not because it impressed us by doing what other online games do, it was it's own game, with it's own style.(with the exception for the constant crashing...) Time goes on, PCs improve and become cheaper!I have fonder memories of 1.0 because inside the game most people acted with a basic form of respect despite the beta forums being a mess. Even if ARR never came around and that world never ended, I would of still pay to play it. It was big enough to improve and expand.
It was the right place for the right type of MMORPGer and plenty of players loved it.
Sir I respect your opinion but all I see you someone showing off their graphics card. I know you when through alot of trouble to replicate each screenshot but graphics are easy enough to adjust. We know the lighting in ARR is better but the over-all graphic from 1.0 was superior hench the critique on how expensive it was to play XIV back then uptil now. Technology has improved and hardware is cheaper for upgrades.
BTW, nice work on those Screenshot! ^^
