If you're just now coming back since the server merges during beta, then yes. In beta they designated half of the 1.0 servers to be in the NA/EU data center and the other half in the JP one. You just happened to be on the wrong one. I'm not saying it's fair or right, I'm just giving the hows and whys of your situation.

There's probably a NA community on Durandal, but it's going to be small in comparison to the JP population. Maybe give it a try and see how hard it is to get things accomplished. If you can't justify the price of the server transfer then I'd just cancel your subscription after 30 days if the environment on Durandal isn't good for you.

In 1.0 all servers were in Japan, so you haven't been moved if you're still in the JP datacenter.

I couldn't care less where the servers are physically located. You shouldn't be confined to a server whose primary language isn't your own, however, nor should you be charged an additional fee to move to another server you can more freely communicate upon. It rather defeats the purpose of playing an online game if you solo the entire time and communicate with no one. They've gone to the effort to re-launch and appeal to people who played before, and had additional weekends to try to get those players back since... and then once they actually convince someone to come back the leave them on a server that speaks a different language? That doesn't seem the best policy to me. Unless your policy is to piss people off, which isn't the best policy for a subscription model. I'm all for global servers, but usually they tend to post the favored language for them and you aren't placed arbitrarily on servers that speak a different language than your own.

SE did notify the community of these changes, and gave a small window of time for free transfers. Unfortunately you didn't care enough to keep up with the game... Now you pay a small fee

In July they gave you multiple weeks to transfer servers for free

You must have abandoned the game for a long period of time to have missed the long lead-in time to the server redeployment when SE announced their plans and provided ample notice for V1 players to take action. You presumably also ignored the e-mails SE sent out to players with V1 accounts and the innumerable posts on the V1 forums.

In addition to the free time the poster above me mentions they also gave a FREE transfers period shortly after V2's launch.

Thus it is entirely a result of your abandonment of the game over a long period that you're in this situation, be thankful SE are allowing you to carry on using your V1 game registration.

I just looked up your character profile on the lodestone. Honestly, if your highest class level really only is Lvl 20 weaver...and your highest battle class level 18 MRD, you really shouldn't have anything on your old 1.0 character you can't re-create/re-earn on any NA server of your choosing. If I were you, I'd just abandon the old character on Durandal, and start over wherever you'd prefer to be.

Seriously, you can get Level 18 MRD in a day...the rest of your assorted levels in about a week.
As to your items/stuff...most of it is probably not worth anything in ARR anyway (even fully decked out 1.0 level 50 gear was made trivial for ARR)
If you even have a lot of gil, it was redominated to 1/10ths it's 1.0 value, and well...you can make it back pretty easily.

You would be better off starting from scratch on any server you wish. If you had friends/a Linkshell in 1.0, maybe look them up and see where they went.
