Actually, XI's maps are a bit bigger, but there's a reason they can do that and it's the same reason that had people complaining in 1.0. Copy-paste. XI makes heavy use of it, they just switch it up so that it's not as obvious. 1.0's zones were huge in comparison, but they weren't as clever with the copy-pasting allowing people to literally count it's uses. Yoshida asked players if they were okay with that in 2.0 and not a one said yes. So, instead, we got 'smaller' zones with very little copy-paste. The masses spoke, Yoshida listened, it's our own fault if we think the zones are small.

The only "copy paste" XI used were similar zones, i.e Valkurm Dones and Cape Terrigan, the rest are made by theme, like all Zilartian areas that were manmade uses cerment, which is why Delkfutt, Feiyin and Ru'Aun Gardens had similar designs but significantly different interiors, similar to real life, victorian houses are all pretty much the same which is why you can easily spot a victorian house. So "heavy use" is stretching it a bit unless you get into specifics.

1.0 zones made heavy use of Copy-Paste, I didn't travel Sarutabaruta then later traveled Gustaburg and felt I was walking down the same chunk of land numerous times.
