Meh if you follow the pulling multiple packs and AoEing concept, as a PLD, I have to run in Shield Oath. Or I can run in Sword Oath and focus single targets like the normal way and it's equally fast. I've done it both ways, one with 2 geared BLMs for AoE run, and a MNK + BRD for the ST run they both timed about the same with the marking and FF group being a lot less hectic and dangerous. I haven't tried the AoE method on my WAR but I feel like multiple packs would eat him alive, even with the 7600 HP I have in group.

how can it slow the run to mark the target? you can do it while the GCD... your escuse are.... stupid, you simply don't want to do it. say it like this, don't go try to prouve that it slow down the group, when most people here show and explain you that the inverse.

Bind mark to ctrl-t or something; and t to "target mark-1".
That's literally all you need to do.

You are a bad tank if you can't handle that - as well as a genuinely bad player.

As both WHM and BRD I love it when the tank marks, and it frustrates me when they don't. If you mark I can tell what I need to sleep, or attack first. I don't have to waste time trying to figure out what you're doing so I can tell what I need to do.

It's very inefficient to focus 1 mob trash mob down in AK vs aoeing them all.

So please stop asking for me to mark mobs.
    Hahahahahahahaha.

GG Zumi, I'm sure someone will fall for this. No one can be *this* stupid.

I don't know what it's like with the new patch. But in CM and Prae if you spam enough Flashes as a PLD in shield oath your hate is rock solid and all the mobs get aoed to death. There's almost no reason to mark in those speed run situations. Only when things get tricky you should mark. Or if you're doing something for the first time through.

You can usually tell what the tank is attacking by looking at the target of his target. Hotkey of T on default I believe.

I'm on the side of marking the targets. It takes me clicking Tab a couple times and 3 or 4 mouse clicks. It's not hard and if stuff goes sideways for whatever reason everyone knows to just follow the plan and let you do your job of cleaning up the mess.

I use a Nostromo Pad, so I have my 1-9 keys set up in a grid and 3 keys to the left of them for shift, control and alt.

numbers is key actions for building enmity and triggering survivability / self-healing
shift numbers is alternate priority actions for soloing or when not worried about enmity
    Control - numbers is marking.
I have yet to need the 'alt' binds.

I can mark a stack of 5 mobs before half the DPS are even in range...

I have a habit of approaching corners from an edge and camming around them. I learned this from 2007 tanking in WoW back when we had no AOE moves at all - we had to LoS pull things and do a lot of tabbing. A corner glance with quick marking set up my pull, and trained the DPS to stay behind me. DPS that go ahead - might pull something and get one-shot before I can get it off them.

Works here too... DPS rarely run in front of a tank unless well... they're bad DPS... the good ones stay behind me, and if I limit the view like this, I can mark with my keybinds before they can even see the targets. They come into view of a nicely arranged pull, and there's no slow down.

Sure... I'm not max level here yet like some people farming the end stuff (42 as of this post). But I've been around the block in several MMOs, and tanking doesn't change much. I even do this stuff in GW2, where's I've managed to prove that all 8 classes there can be built as near tanks, and you can mark 1 target. But what worked in 2007 in WoW, works today in FFXIV. Even better in fact than it does in modern WoW.

OP's "AOE it all" mindset - that's a 2013 WoW tank speaking... those kinds of tanks really don't have play skill. They rely on a game engine that is way too forgiving and built for 1 to 3 button rotations... Maybe that works at endgame here too... but not from what I keep reading from other folks.
