FFXI was the exception because it used POL. POL was able to be housed inside XBL's intranet and allowed to tunnel into the XI servers. This let Square keep their servers in their own house and allow them full access to them in the case of maintainence and other issues. It also reduced the Hardware Overhead Costs of running the game on two seperate networks MS Intranet and SE Intranet. Because only the POL software was on MS's side and it had very little hardware impact.
Most other developers say "We'd love to have our MMO on the 360." but then they get to the architecture for the hardware and realize its completely ridiculous the rules MS forces on them.
1. The Players who connect Via XBL and the XBL360 can not play on the same servers as players on PSN and the PS3.
2. Players who connect via XBL can not have access to the outside internet.
3. Players who connect via XBL can not have the ability to circumvent XBL for connectivity.
4. The developer is responsible for the hardware costs of maintaining the server, but the server must be housed in a MS Datacenter to give it access to the XBL Intranet.
5. Updates have to be distributed in a specific format. Updates of a certain size must have a cost value associated purchasable through the Microsoft XBLA storefront.
POL Circumvents these rules as I understand it by the following.
1. The XBL POL Client only connects to XBL POL.
2. POL Doesn't give access to the internet, only internal FFXI content.
3. You have to be on XBL to access POL, (Silver)
4. POL Servers are inside the MS Intranet and tunnel to the XI servers.
5. None of the updates to XI are done on the XBL side of the client but the XI side of the client which is considered segregated.
Ultimately if XIV were to end up on the 360 it would be on POL which SE has already stated they no longer will support new games being developed to the platform.
I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.
No MMO will truely go to 360 anymore
Champions was also slated for 360 release and canceled it due to 360s closed server policy and wanting a ton of money
there were a few others too which were supposed to have it yet got canceled for the same reason
11 was literaly the only exception ever to this rule

Yo guys I got a great idea. How bout lets wait for the game to get fixed?
How the hell would they run out of HDD space on ps3 and blu-ray disc is beyond me. Ever seen a 2-disc ps3 release in your life? Ever seen a 2 disc release with as little content and as much recycling as XIV on ps3?
Besides given the memory limitations on XI and ps2 I think they are still doing just fine with it and by now have released 10 games worth of expansions and content on it. I don't see any reason why that wouldn't work on ps3.
My guess is that the whole memory limitations is just a quick excuse to explain the lack of zones and variation with lazy environment design.

SE have to worry about the people with the 40GB HDD for PS3 lol yes i know who the hell still have a 40GB for there PS3 you can even update it but there people are to hard headed to update like ps2 players for ffxi any 2001 year and up can play ffxi without issue but w/eHow the hell would they run out of HDD space on ps3 and blu-ray disc is beyond me. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together Autographed By "Akihiko Yoshida Tarot Card Sweepstakes Winner
Sony destroyed the 40gb ps3 with their updates that burnt out the blue ray laser forcing people to buy a new one.
FFXIV on the new Nintendo o_O the thought never occurred to me, but that would be awesome. The PS4 and next XBOX release seem to be in the distant future so a release for the current systems would be best (I think).
It would be interesting to see whether the rumored touchscreen-controller of the new Nintendo console solves some of XIVs UI problems or actually creates more...
Btw, do we have any word on Move support once it hits the PS3?
