How to use Xbox Controller with PC?

Depends on the game certain games just recognize it others you need to download software to run it I believe the PS3 pad software motionjoy also works for setting up an xbox pad .

I believe xbox/360 and other x-input gamepads are just plug-and-play

They do plug in and play but as I said not all games recognise them I am using one for ffvii and had to use software for it to work

I used an XBOX 360 wired controller. To do so. You need to search for the assecories software on the microsoft website and download it and install it. after it is installed, plug in you rcontroller. then after it is reconized, go to your control panel, Device manager, click on the Xbox contoller, update driver, Then pick choose from list, find the controller again, and then make sure it is using the up to date driver. After that log into FF14 and in one of the configs I believe it to be system or in config at the start screen click calibrate controller. do that and then done. You can now use your XBOX 360 controller in game.

I plugged my 360 controller into an available usb port, than I started FFXIV up, logged in and starded playing.

Yea the 360 controller should be plug and play for most versions on Windows, FFXIV has support for 360 controllers as well.
In the configuration menu, if you enable game pad you can choose between the PS3 controller or the "A,B,X,Y" controller which is the 360 controller, complete with all the correct button icons and colors.
