I had the same thought op, was always getting overflowed with leve rewards etc going into armory chest.
There is an option I finally noticed that will put any new item into inventory rather then armory chest, it has helped a lot for me.
system>> character config. >> control settings >> character
here,s a screen of the option to not place newly obtained items into armory

Agree with op I always end up selling something that is being used by a gearset rendering it useless.
Bring back the good ol times

That would be extremely useful, especially for crafters selling equipment

I found a good way of sorting my armoury of things that are actually used and things useless. Having a lot of different jobs and class, all at different levels, it was a real mess, specially for the jewelry part.
So, while waiting for the icon you're asking that is a really good idea and will make things a lot simpler, here how I do it :
I repair all my stuff.
I then equip each class one by one, doing one fight with combat classes, one gathering with gathering ones, and one craft with crafters ones.
Then, I get rid of all what is at 100% condition in my armoury, that means it's not used anymore.

I agree. A symbol or something would be super handy. Especially like you said when you have soo many classes it gets confusing. So either put a symbol or even the class symbol or even when you go to sell it a pop up window says, "Are you sure you want to sell this, it is equipped on another class", or something. Like everyone else I always end up selling something and then I have to go buy it again.![]()
Don't let this die! Now that I have more jobs higher levels, it's getting worse!
