Well, aside from FF11, all the other FF games were single player games. Issues like class favoritism work out a bit differently in MMOs. Though I agree with you that cross-class skill dependencies could be really cool when they work, they apparently just got too hard to balance well.

Balancing can be one of the hardest things with MMOs. Developers are urged to create a wide variety of content, and yet still have all of that content equally playable by all classes, and yet at the same time make sure each class is unique in how they're played. Fitting all three of those requirements together can be a major challenge, indeed.

(Personally, I still think FFXI should have been called Final Fantasy Online, and FFXIV should then be Final Fantasy Online II. Single-player RPGs and MMORPGs are really two different genres, so these two are effectively a spin-off series.)
