The only things we know are
    1) FFXIV forced SE to take a massive loss this year.
    2) Launching FFXIV for PS3 costs more money
    3) FFXIV is still losing money for SE every month
    4) SE is working to improve SE for PC
    5) SE did not report that they are planning to release on PS3 within the next fiscal year.

What that means for PS3 is grim, and yet people seem to think it's coming soon.

It would definitely help everyone if an announcement were made about this.
Except they aren't all about the PC version right now. The PC version is out, but its slowly dying. Yes, the upcoming changes are supposed to bring some players back. But even with all the improvements, any addition of players will likely be slow, and the amount of active players and size of the community may not increase fast enough to satisfy players.

Hence why SE NEEDS the PS3 release. If the game is much improved, then they can market the heck out of the PS3 version, release it to the public, and hopefully a large number of players will all jump onboard at once on day one of the PS3 release, and the community as a whole gets a huge shot in the arm.

That's why the PS3 version will not be cancelled. SE cannot simply rely only on the PC version at this point it time. Also keep in mind that while the PC market is heavily competitive in terms of MMOs, one can't say the same for the console market, and as such the PS3 version can succeed if everything falls into place.
