good comment, keep em coming guys!I mean that while it is an interesting feature and works great in a game where the environment is more modifiable, those aren't the kinds of features I'd like the dev. teams to focus on in this game. I never was much for sandbox games, and I don't think this one should develop into one.

There have been a few threads about making Eorzea a more dynamic place, and this idea certainly would accomplish that. Though I am curious if once the road was built if it would ever need to be repaired and how much work people would be willing to keep it maintained? Though, when you look at it that way, it's easy to see why the roads are in such a state of disrepair.I think it would be cool if they added a stone mason job and you could do things like repair the cobblestone pathways or build roads. Something that may take the effort of 200+ ppl the course of a week to a month real time to complete, a joint effort of many to help unify us and accomplish something great that can physically be seen.
Then anyone traveling on these roads would travel at 20% faster than traveling through grass.
I know this probably wont happen because it would physically change the maps but I thought it would be a cool idea.
Also you could have carpenters and other jobs be able to build new structures or fix existing ones, say that were damaged from a amal'jaa attack on the city or something. Again probably not gonna happen, but I think it would be really awesome to be able to create a in game building that's there for all to see
But if Eorzea had a series of "social projects" that needed to get accomplished in order to make improvements that everyone could benefit from, I would be solidly behind them. (Upkeep on them, I'm not so sure.) Repair a stretch of road and get granted a movement bonus while traveling over that section. Built a bridge to open up new areas to explore in a zone. Add or improve buildings at the Silver or Golden Bazaar to bring in more NPCs, opening up quests and other conveniences not seen outside of the city (like the MW or an AH if they introduce it). Clear out blocked tunnels in the mines (which occasionally close back up) to delve deeper down into them. And so on...
Now that would be interesting.
Neat idea

I like the idea, but I smell alot of servers with dirty words written using pathways >_>
yeah it's a fun idea, would certainly give more importance to crafter jobs and bring more life to the game. Once the road is completed (or the segment of it) then you can have carpenters build fences to border it :P
Could be done by the devs if those special crafting events would be predetermined so that the roads wouldnt be built just anywhere and go everywhere at once.
lol yeah but not if those were predetermined. Like we have dirt roads now, the masons could work those roads to pave them and maintain them. Not let every mason build a road just anywhere.
Same thing if they allow for building houses and stuff, there would need to be predetermined places where such strustures can be built.

It would be in all sorts of languages, too. Truly a multicultural game.
When airships finally get introduced into the game and I can just imagine looking down at an aerial view of Thanalan...
Me: "Hey look, you can see the road from... MY MOM'S A WHAT!?!"
Friend: "Hmmm, in three languages, too."
Though, I doubt they'd give us that much freedom to lay bricks. Otherwise... you want to what!? Pave all of Thanalan? o.O Sweet Azeyma, that's insane. (And quite possibly brilliant.)
Or bridges to nowhere that would mar the landscape.
Me: "Where does that bridge go?"
Crazy: "To the other side of the hill."
Me: "That you could have easily walked down?"
Crazy: "Don't tell ME how to play MY game!"
::slowly backs away::
Im slowly getting on board with the social project idea. I dont think it should be exclusive to a crafting class though. Mason would be a nice class on its own though, with its own set of crafts. Repairing a road could require a combination of skills or ranks, or be more efficient depending on class being used. A cook with mason rank 1 wouldnt be as fast at it than a cook with mason rank 50, but he should still be allowed to try, yes?
My original thought had been to only be able to build/repair roads in set places. This would include the main pathways veiwable on the mini-map and maybe a few smaller pathways to the mines for instance. It would be in all sorts of languages, too. Truly a multicultural game.

Yes! This would be a social project requiring many people, all services would be needed. The sky is the limit with what you could do. Maybe miners would be needed to quarry stones, alchemists would make the cement and mortar. You could have low level masons make easier parts of the path, while the higher rank masons complete the harder parts. You could even have cooks prepare meals and drinks for the workers (which would give bonuses to whatever they are doing)Im slowly getting on board with the social project idea. Imagine if they fixed the environment collision so that it would be possible to fall off ledges and possibly die or take a big hp hit. Then the carpentars really would have a reason to build/repair fences. It would fit perfectly into the game *SPOILER*, I already had a quest where a caravan drove off the side of the road and busted the fence all up, plus some of those fences near the edges of cliffs look to be in serious need of repair!
