[Theory][Possible Spoilers] Could everything be just memory?

Could the whole telling for FFXIV:ARR be just our character viewing their past memories? Unless I am forgetting, there is nothing stoping our character from using The Echo to look into our own past.

If this is true, could it be that the game is actually taking place in some distant future as our characters are looking back at their lives? I would like to hear other's views on this theory.

There's nothing stopping that from being the case; we've seen echoes within echoes before... the trouble is that you end up making the story pretty disingenuous and ruining a lot of the spirit.

This idea ranks up there with the FFVIII theory of "they all died and this is their dream in purgatory" to explain the latter parts of the game.

Plausible, but exceedingly anti-climatic if true.

Our characters looking back at the thrilling moments they spent idling in Mor Dhona and running Prae for hours on end or gathering the same item for the umpteenth time. Our characters are dead, and Eorzea is hell.
