Repost from the Titan Lagg thread.

While not related to internet lag, here's a tip for those who play on PS3.

Check your TV settings. Modern TVs will often have a "Game Mode" setting. With "Game Mode" off, the TV does post processing on images to make them look nicer but effectively adds lag! In some cases, depending on how cheap your TV is, it can be 100+ milliseconds! Turning "Game Mode" on should disable the post processing and eliminate the additional lag.

I also use the "cast/use a skill once I am clear of an AOE to update my position" trick and it seems to work.

Speed of connection does not correlate to lag.
Spamming an ability when you are out of the AoE is the best way to avoid it.

if you do a search on 'red circle aoe' you will find this thread that is almost 90 pages long now. it is about the problem you are talking about

    http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...red+circle+aoe

I hope I linked it correctly, if not just do the search you will find it. no reply at all . . . 89 pages of complaints. go figure.

    1) Keep in mind that you'll be hit by the AoE if you're in the red area when the cast bar fills up. There's usually a small delay between the time that the cast bar fills up, and the time that the mob does its attack animation. You can be halfway across the screen when the mob does its attack animation, but it won't matter. The game calculates your location when the cast bar fills up.

In other words, get out of the AoE as soon as it pops up. You may think you've got time to finish that cast, do one more attack, or check one more thing before moving. You don't. Because the attack actually hits before it appears to hit. Get out of the AoE right now. Your DPS/heals/enmity is going to drop to zero when you die. The most important thing is to get out of the AoE area right away.

    2) I had the same problem with getting out of AoEs, especially on Titan. As others have suggested, the best method for me has been to step slightly out of the AoE area, and then use an ability. That forces the server to update your location. It's also much less stressful.

    3) You also might want to check your ping to the FFXIV servers. If your ping is high, then the problem is your internet connection, and not the game. There are methods to lower your ping -- including using a VPN service or a ping minimizer -- but you'll have to google those, since I'm not going to endorse any of them.

my way around the bug. once I am past the boundry of the red, I stop IMMEDIATELY, and then move again. this seems to update my position.

personally, I am truly disappointed in this behavior. I remember maybe about 10 or so years ago multi player games were hitting the internet and the first wave had all these kinds of position update problems like in this game. you would play with a friend and they would see you in a different place than you did on your screen.

then world of warcraft came out, and a multitude of games after that, and positioning with no lag seemed really solid. for me, it seemed that the days of this positional lag problem have been long gone. and then this game came out . . .

every single mmo I have played for the last 5+ years has been totally devoid of this problem but it somehow comes up in this game? how do you do that? and so many posts and no reply.

Very little you can do to fix it, its on SE to fix it, obviously the Aoe markers and affects are out of sync from the actual attacks by a lot.

For healers out there, who won't nessecarily be actively targetting the boss - set the boss as your focus target (shift + f I think by default), this'll place a mini version of the bosses bar on your screen, including his casting bar which will buy you precious additional time before the AoE bar is rendered, as well as alerting you to abilities with more subtle telegraphs (ie. AK's "impending catastrophe", Gogomera's "voice" abilities, the cyclop's "thousand onze swing" etc)

if you are tanking, it helps to be stacking on top of the mob rather than in front of him (think chimera). in that way, when the cone appears u just have to run forward only a tiny bit to be out od the circle.

when tanking bosses like aiatar, i simply strafe left and right. it pisses the mnk / drg off but i save the party by always avoiding the breathe attack.
