Knowledge and good deeds burn like wildfire through the community. It only takes one person to start the fireIf it's easy it means less. Caps and a grind don't make things hard, they make things take more time. If you aren't part of a person's social circle you easily become an object of the game... as you aren't struggling to achieve anything with them. You are doing 1 of your 8 runs a week with them never to be seen again. If you aren't 100% perfect you are wasting their time as a random.
There is little incentive to be friendly or helpful as you rarely get any positive feedback from doing so the way the game is set up.
So here we are. These things aren't really the cause of internet assholeisim, but are what is in this game that enables it.
In their defense, you have plenty of time to read the requirements before you even queue.I remember when I was in one of the guildhests where you have to kill all the monsters at the same exact time or they came back...and I didn't know that... I tried reading the hint at the beginning but the 3 other people that joined the duty finder with me took off towards the monsters and I felt rushed and went with them...
I didn't kill everything at the same time and was greeted with "NOOB kill them all together" "You should quit. You're bad noob" "Can't you read? Why are you even here?" (I probably cleaned up the grammar a bit).

Still doesn't justify how they reacted to him? They could have been civil and not resort to being toxic by his account. Two lefts don't make a right, you just end up going backwards.
