I personally can't wait until they realize that classes are pointless and abolish them entirely. I mean who even uses them past their first job crystal in the first place anyways?

try not to think classes as some kind of under class.
The class and Job is more like class progression system.
Classes serve as the base for how your character progress. Cross-skills is more used to provide some alternatives to the class. If you need more DD, Tank, or buffs then you can go to corss-skills to obtain a bit more as a way to help imporve the character's role use or suvivablilty.
Jobs focus more one altering your base progressing into different roles.
Arcanist, for example, focus on multitasking with Summon 1 being range DD and Summon 2 being tank and provides some heal to help manage the summons but once you enter 30 and choose your Job you are given a choice into what progress you want to enter. You can enter Summoner to advance more into the multitasking ability with more summons or enter Scholar to changing your role and pet into healing by advancing Arcanist's healing skills. Jobs also provide more stats, like any Job advance system, that helps support the character's stats into their chosen role path.
Not to mention Arcanist's Jobs have shown Jobs can alter the base class skills such as how Scholar and Summoner alter Arcanist summon skills to provide different summons separate from Arcanist summons.
