    [dev1062] targeting ideas

Targeting should be adapted to a more user-friendly system. My ideas are as follows:

    1. As of right now on the keyboard, you select target prior to melee attacking. Melee attack commands should be executed similar to spells; select action first, select target second. This is the way every FF game has been in the past that I can think of. Regardless of if it is melee or magic the action should be selected first and the target selected second.

After the desired action/ability is selected, targeting should be the next task and it should work as follows:

There should be a toggle button with 3 main options to toggle between targeting enemies, allies, and npc.

The enemies targeting option should have 2 sub-options to toggle between. The first option should consist of the enemies you are engaged with in battle. The second option should consist of the enemies that are not engaged in battle.

The allies targeting option should have 2 sub-options to toggle between. The first option should consist of the allies in your current party. The second option should consist of the allies that are not in your current party.

The current system that requires spamming tab through 40 allies, npc’s, and enemies is not working. It is not fast enough. The mouse helps, but it is not always useful in certain circumstances.

It sounds like you're describing a variation on "Target Mode B" where you manually filter all the targets AFTER picking your action by using a toggle button. As opposed to the current Target Mode B where you use a toggle button to filter the targets BEFORE you iniate any actions.

I don't think that would be more efficient since you'd have to do alot of "target filtering" (looks like 2 button presses from the way you describe it) per action. I'm not sure if you meant it that way, but that's how it sounds from the way you word it.

Perhaps you meant the tweak below that your suggestion inspired?

I don't like TMB(Target Mode B), so I don't use it much, but from what I remember it currently works like this:
    • Use TMB:Enemies, hit "Cure 2", it won't do anything since you can't cure Enemies.
    • Use TMB:Friendly, hit "Aero II", it won't do anything since you can't attack allies.
If that's correct (can't check since I'm at work now and will forget when I get home), then Target Mode B really sucks. When you click on an action, it should behave like it does in Target Mode A, where it only let's you select targets that the action can be executed on. Meaning...
    • Use TMB:Enemies, hit "Cure 2", target cursor comes up and lets you cycle through Curable targets
    • Use TMB:Friendly, hit "Aero II", target cursor comes up and lets you cycle through attackable targets
The filters for "Enemies" and such should ONLY take effect when you're Tabbing around through targets with NO action selected. Meaning if you're just standing there, chilling, change TMB to Enemies, then only Enemies would be selected when you hit Tab, except, you should still be able to use a Cure spell if you choose without having to change to Friendly or Party mode.

If TMB already works like I suggest above (which I doubt it does since I'm pretty sure that's why I never used it), then just forget I said anything.
