Do you know how long it takes to render graphics...

I understand the whole "PC is better" thing getting old. I myself prefer console gaming. After all gaming consoles are created and designed with ONE goal in mind... Gaming Entertainment. It's sole purpose is gaming. Although recent consoles have additional features now.
PC's are still multitasking computing machines designed for many different purposes. UNLESS you build a sole GAMING rig, they purpose of the build is usually never GAMING alone. The upcoming STEAM OS and STEAMbox will change this theory though...

After my ps3 died playing this game... i've moved to pc and it can render out high level fates no problem with all effects on. This show the limits of the ps3 because with ALL effects off, the ps3 wouldn't load the enemies in the fates.

But back to the ps3's rendering capabilities. You have to realize that the engine used in FFXIV renders out INGAME cutscenes... They are hardly pre-rendered. PIXAR films and such are pre-rendered. Thus the PS3's ability to play 1080p footage and cutscenes that are pre-rendered. BUT because most of the action and scenes in FFXIV are INGAME engine rendered... the processor and everything has to render it in real time... with cutscenes this isn't too much of a problem, but add 30+players' characters, effects, enemies, and server info on what each needs to be doing.... it taxes the PS3 greatly... to the point where the DEVs decided a 720p @ 30FPS lock would benefit the ps3. Most of your gameplay isn't pre-rendered... that is the issue.

This has almost zero impact actually (I know as I've replaced my HDD which has died just the might before beta 4 stage with SSD) as PS3 can't benefit much from the increased speed of SSD due to it limited controller specs / speed. The only "benefit" is no noise from hard drive, and in some places it's a little bit faster but in ranges of 5 to max 10% so definitelly not worth the money invested - rather get 1 TB 2.5" new hard drive instead.

I find myself wondering if the PS3 version of this game has a graphic setting option. I know, because it's the PS3 it can/should handle all of the game's graphics, but I notice that during FATEs, I receive more lag than not, and I imagine it's because of so many flashy skills being process on the screen at once... But I may be wrong?

The PS3 is a piece of junk compared to a half decent PC. No there is no graphics option/s. If you want a better experience, get a PC, or wait til PS4. Horrible graphics 30 fps cap, lag, and glitches doesn't sound like fun.

If you understand that, then why do you steadfastly defend current gen consoles vs PC? lol, Except in remarkable cases like....The Last of Us, The graphics are pretty bad, with little to no anisotropic filtering or anti-aliasing, low draw distance, fps limit usually of 30 ( ewwwwwww), screen tearing, long load times, yada yada yada...PC is superior in every conceivable way.
And don't give me the controller on a couch rarn, cuz I can use a controller with my PC.
Hell I don't even understand defending the upcoming ones. They are essentially a over priced low end PC. ( by that I mean x86 code, and no strange proprietary or odd ball hardware IBM cpu or anything. 8 core cpu, 8gb of ram, and a gpu equivalent to a 7850/70)
For machines with JUST GAMING in mind, they fail pretty hard.
For machines that do JUST GAMING, you'd expect them to free up some awesome power. Instead you get a feeble, gimped experience ( this game comes to mind as a example... the Witcher 3 console version is a joke..Skyrim..many examples)

Also, agree with above. A SSD isn't gonna do much good. You're gonna put a Sata3 blazing fast SSD into a machine with a sata 1 controller. It will bottleneck it big time. I would call any reports of a huge difference a placebo effect, or just plain bad info.

ok.. when I defend consoles i'm not talking about terms of SPECS... I'm talking about GAMING entertainment... I (<keyword) PREFER Games that come out on console. There are more games that I enjoy that don't have a PC version. I like the gaming world in terms of console. There are a few PC games I enjoy (starcraft comes to mind), but for the most part when I think of the "gaming" world I think more of the lines of the Console generation... I started with NES and that's probably where it comes from. I never associated sitting at a computer desk playing solo as "gaming." My childhood revolved around friends coming over to play street fighter or mario. YES, nowadays with the internet more "multiplayer" games are available to play online with friends, but to ME, playing with friends at the house is SOO much better. Hell even every week my friends bring their ps3's over to play FFXIV in the same room with me (continued below...)

This is false.

PS3 CAN Handle any game at 1080, the only reason why theres is only a handful of games on PS3 that are 1080, is because the difficulty of developing for PS3 makes things to expensive, and it's cheaper to develop at 720, then it is at 1080.

Fully agree, PS3 is capable of full 1080p graphics it simply comes down to the studios. This game however is supposed to come available for the PS4 so anxious on what they will do for it. Higher res graphics i would hope

Lolz. No..it's not capable of it. Technically it is, if you dumbed down the graphics to a abysmal level, but that would be playing semantics.
There is no modern game the PS3 can run at 1080p, with out neutering the graphics horribly.

First off, a gamer is a gamer. I don't care what system it's on if it's awesome. SO that whole "not the SAME" thing there...I don't follow. 9/10 games are available on both PC and consoles, and the PC version is always FAR superior.
And don't give me that I prefer to play on my couch bit, cuz there's nothing stopping you from piping your pc game to your tv by hdmi and using a controller unless you're way behind in tech and don't have that option.

I have very few friends that would disconnect their gaming rig to lan party over someones house. A few laptop users will, but they always get crap from the desktop friends for using a "gaming" laptop instead of a tower. I didn't say PC and Console GAMERS weren't GAMERS. Once again miss understood... I said PC and CONSOLE gamers are NOT the same in terms of MINDSET... the proof can be seen in this thread, on this forums, and by personal experience from friends over the years.

I don't think one is better than the other... I deem them as just two different preferences... Like I said the game I (<once again keyword) PREFER to play are usually offered on the console. Some Final Fantasy series never released for PC, "Ghostbusters" the video game didn't, etc. Those are games I like to play. Yes many games have PC versions, but even so, I prefer to game them on a console. Resident evil for example... even FPS like BF3.

Tech specs wont lie, PC's can excel, but its preference... (<keyword)
