I'm going to predict that our characters have a lot in common with the Ascians (in terms of powers, being Forged by their patron crystal, etc), only their crystal (Zodiark?) has a different aim than ours (Hydaelyn) does. For all we know, unless it's ever said outright that our characters actually came from somewhere specific, that we may even be constructs made specifically to do Hydaelyn's will.

Wouldn't that be a trip. =P
