Hmmm.... One possible way to circumvent the multiple model problem would be to use the Hull shader and the Tessellation shader to introduce tear artifacts in the model based on its durability. That introduces all sorts of issues though, like making the durability data available to the graphics pipeline and the actual tessellation algorithm may end up being too complex to run on some tessellation shaders. It's still prohibitively expensive, but in a different way (once implemented, you wouldn't need to build new models for each piece of gear, but the implementation step would take a very long time). That being said, it's not a totally crazy idea. We're talking potentially Masters (or at least not Bachelor) level programming here to do it right though, so hardly the sort of thing SE wants to put the time and money into doing, if I had to guess.

It's very difficult to implement in this game because you'd have to make seperate models of each equipment item for their individual different stages of wear 'n tear.

Robe@100%, robe@50%, robe@<25% condition, for instance. Assuming only that level of simplicity for the sake of example, the people who work on the graphics would have to make two new item models of every piece of gear just to pull it off.

The next "issue" is a more cosmetic of preference type. Does everybody want their character's gear to go through visual stages of damage? Normally, Final Fantasy characters go through an entire game in the same outfit and their clothing is no worse for the wear than it was at the beginning, even if they've been getting blown up, shoved off of cliffs, or wailed on by countless enemy attacks. Ideally, even if such a thing were to be implemented, I'm sure a lot of people would be disgruntled if they couldn't have an option to deactivate this on their own character's appearance.

I\\'m interested to know if this is something they could implement, its possible that it might be too much work, and there are flaws, such as how to "damage" a bikini. Still I think it\\'s a great feature that at least deserves to be considered, if I could get a response from the forum staff that\\'d be great but I don\\'t expect miracles.

What do you forum folks think? Possible? Would you like to see battle damage?
SE can't even figure out vanity slots. This would likely make their heads explode.
