I'm playing SMN and I just came from an AK run where our SCH healer was ragging on me, right from the very first pull, about how bad of a player I am because I wasn't using a DPS rotation she thought was better.

I was using Ruin II + Energy Drain, and he thought I should be using Ruin I + Fester because he thought it did more damage.

Ruin I (2.45 cast time + 2.45 recast, 80 potency) + Fester (300 max potency)
You can cast 9 Ruins and 3 Festers every 60 seconds: (9 * 80) + (3 * 300) = 1620 total potency damage per 60 seconds.

Ruin II (instant + 2.45 recast, 80 potency) + Energy Drain (150 potency)
You can cast 21 Ruin IIs and 3 Energy Drains every 60 seconds: (21 * 80) + (3 * 150) = 2130 total potency damage per 60 seconds.

A difference of 510 potency, or 32% more damage. This is not an insignificant amount.

So please, just let players play how they want. Just because they're not following the norm, doesn't mean they're bad players.

right there is your problem. Ruin I (and any spell with a cast time) starts it's recast timer when you START casting, not when it finishes. So the total time to cast and recast is 2.45 seconds, not 2.45+2.45/.

There really isn't a "best way" to do a lot of things, but there are some noticeable ways to do things completely incorrectly. I've seen BLM completely neglect Blizzard to regen mana and I've seen tanks never use Flash or Overpower for multiple mobs.

This is why people out there SHOULD listen to others...theres a good chance they know what they're talking about. Don't take random strangers advice as gospel, but chances are that there is always room for improvement (unless you're getting World Firsts).
